Those were the days :), 9 different makes ;).
Lots of significant and rememberable names there as well.
-
Yes they were fun times and this track was also one of the best it was common to see 5,000 to 10,000 spectators at the GN.
-
G'day Stan.
what a great thing to post up. its a legendary race meeting the grand national here in vic.
can you scan the rest of the programme when you have time and post it ? i would like to see the support races entries.
-
Me too Stan. Arguably the best track in the state in its day. Do you have any more photos. I have current ones of the track. Jerry
-
Stan S, charge em more than 40cents each a copy ,,there's inflation ya know ;) ;D :P
-
No problems I will post the rest of the program today

-
Amazing......I didn't compete in the event but came away with first prize ... ;D

And where are all those sidecars now :P
RIP Steve Smith Wasp Imports Ballarat 8)

-
Yes and also R.I.P Jim Colligan Seve's passenger who was killed at Bathhurst with Ian Thornton in the early 90's.
-
Stan S
Great stuff have you any more stuff from that era,
#8 or #67 in 2nd Division of the Junior Motocross Trophy
-
Hi, number8, yes I have got plenty that I can have a look through.
Cheers.
-
Great Stuff Stan.
thanks for posting it up. i enjoy reading this stuff.
just as a matter or interest what years does you collection cover?
-
I think from about 73 to 79 ish
-
Great stuff, Stan. Thanks! ;D
Lots of recognisable names in there.
Is Course Marshall Lou Martin the same bloke as photographer Lou Martin?
-
No sorry Tony I don't know if it's the same Lou Martin.
-
I had a look through my "OLD Stuff" boxes, and I came across the programme for the 1973 Grand National at Christmas Hills. What a catalogue of names and bikes. A mate and I made the long trip down from Mackay to compete. Ever seen a massed start with 4 rows of what seemed like 20 to a row? Or been in the middle of it? A fantastic track! If I can relearn how to post photos, I'll scan it.
Mike
-
The only mass start I remember was Geelong in '83. The was 2 rows of 20 in the 125's chosen by riding number. I was first on the second row being numer 301.
Nothing like 4 rows, but still pretty interesting being in the middle of it. :-\

Hi Jerry, I found this one of Anton Alers and Rob Gordon in the 77 Grand National.
-
That would be Anton Alers not long before his career ending injury..
-
If I remember correctly it was at that meeting.
-
Keep it coming Stan! I was at that meeting too. Absolute tragedy Anton could have gone on to the big time overseas Im sure. If I remember correctly he had gone over to Europe earlier in the year and raced at Namur. The last I heard of him he was rallying. Jerry

Not that lucky.....

-
I wondered what you meant but now it's all clear. You lucky fella you.
-
Great to see the old program. Amazing that myself and John (Toby) Robertson rode at that meeting and then meet up 30 years later in Proserpine with him purcahsing one of my maicos to get back into vmx. He still luvs to remind me that things haven't changed that he was faster than me back than and still is now.
Rosco 86.
-
glad you enjoyed it Rosco I will try and put more on over the next few weeks.

Unfortunatley I was on the boat which the crew decided to go on strike for a week. Camped at the boat terminal in Devenport and had to miss the Wallan meeting that Gaston rode at the following weekend.
Cheers Stan.
-
Stan your a legend! this exactly the info I have been looking for. It encapsulates a golden era of OZ mx that I have precious memories of. If you have any more dont be shy about posting it. Thanks again Jerry
-
Gday Jerry, yes I have got heaps more. I will keep posting as I get time.

Gday Tony, re: mass starts that you mentioned I remember this one that we rode in SA at the Laurie Boulter Motocross at Harrowgate 25th of April 1977. 5 rows. Very scary in the first corner.

day Tony, re: mass starts that you mentioned I remember this one that we rode in SA at the Laurie Boulter Motocross at Harrowgate 25th of April 1977. 5 rows. Very scary in the first corner.
Stan, they were obviously grouped in order of ability, style, sophistication etc etc etc.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Yeah I don't know how they worked it out, but I tell you the first lap was very interesting. I think I have a clipping from the first corner pileup. I will post it if I can find it.
Stan
-
Can't remember the 77 pile-up, so would love to see any pics. I do remember the 76 pile-up; I think Mike Landman and I were the only ones to survive (he because he was in the lead and me because I was dead last) ::)

Yeah you are right the pile up was 76. I remember running over Dave Basham's bike in the first corner.
Stan.
-
Stan, I was in the midst of it and saw Dave go down and others all around me. Probably watched as you came to grief. By some miracle, the way was clear for me so I got a good break on the pack with Landman.....and we never looked back :D :D :D

I have got the cutting photo I was telling you about I will try and post it tonight. By the way from what I remember I came out of the corner with Lester and had a great battle for most of the race.

Stan,
Great photos. What were you on that year?
-
I was on that 250 Montesa that is running over Bashams bike.
Stan
-
Stan, going for that extra traction :D
Now I see Lester behind you ......
Who is Landman dicing with? Another Yamaha, but not sure of the rider.
Do you have the program from that year?

I don't know who the other Yamaha rider is with Mike. I had forgotten it was run over 2 legs and the crash was in the second leg. I have got the program with some results written in it. I will post it on a new thread tonight.
Regards
Stan.
-
Stan,
Had another look at the photos...it looks very much like Bash's riding style and his long helmet peak. Cheers
-
Yes could very well be.
Stan.
-
Stan,
It is great to see these old programmes, and they bring back a lot of memories.
The scary part is that I am listed as an official at both the 1975 and 1977 events.
Do you know how long ago that was?
Cheers,
-
Yeah I remember everyday when I get out of bed how long ago that was.
Stan
-
Great line-up of announcers in those days. Obviously the club was very wealthy. Didn't the first guy go on to be a TV celebrity or something like that......the name is very familiar ??? ??? ::) ::)
-
If you mean Ross Martin he was a high profile M.A. steward. Don't think he was a TV star but they seem to need the same attention. (sorry did I say that out loud)
Stan
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Almost as bad as Presidents of State controlling bodies ::) ::) ::) ::)
:-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Yes your right on the money there.
Stan.
-
Stan,
The ;D was for Ross Martin and the ::) was for me. The :-* was for any-one who might have felt offended. ;) ;)
-
Stan, how come you still have all of those programs with the results written in? Was it parents keeping the records or have you always been an avid recorder of events?
-
I've got a few old programs like that where my father wrote the results in.. good to look back on.
-
Why is it that you only realise what a good idea it would have been to keep programs when its way too late? ??? ???
I think I have 2 old ones from the 70's somewhere, but I doubt that there are any results in them. Will look tonight.
-
I have all mine from the mid 70's starting in minibikes through till '83
-

I was lucky enough to have a big sister who used to come to all the meetings and for my 21st she put together a huge scrap book for me. It's funny, after she stopped coming to the meetings I stopped saving the programs etc.
Stan
-
I have a stack of that old stuff the old man kept.I will scan them soon and post them.

Ho HO HO you guys are such a laugh. I remember when the pain would go away after the second day not week.

Thanks for the memories Stan.
Interesting you mention the Laurie Boulter MXs in SA of '76 & '77. Rode in both of those & was one of the lucky ones to pull a "Row 1" gate...Had a look through the old trusty shed archives to find a dusty 3rd place sash for '76 ( Mike Landman won that year) .
Cheers
-
Tony, more info on this thread....cheers

But, Stan, we all now know that you had a plan to use the South Ozzies for traction :D

The only ones I could use for traction were the ones lying on the ground in the first corner, I couldn't catch the others ;D ;D
