Unfortunatley I was on the boat which the crew decided to go on strike for a week. Camped at the boat terminal in Devenport and had to miss the Wallan meeting that Gaston rode at the following weekend.

The only mass start I remember was Geelong in '83. The was 2 rows of 20 in the 125's chosen by riding number. I was first on the second row being numer 301.
Nothing like 4 rows, but still pretty interesting being in the middle of it. 

Gday Tony, re: mass starts that you mentioned I remember this one that we rode in SA at the Laurie Boulter Motocross at Harrowgate 25th of April 1977. 5 rows. Very scary in the first corner.

Stan, they were obviously grouped in order of ability, style, sophistication etc etc etc....

Yeah I don't know how they worked it out, but I tell you the first lap was very interesting. I think I have a clipping from the first corner pileup. I will post it if I can find it.

Can't remember the 77 pile-up, so would love to see any pics.  I do remember the 76 pile-up; I think Mike Landman and I were the only ones to survive (he because he was in the lead and me because I was dead last)

Yeah you are right the pile up was 76. I remember running over Dave Basham's bike in the first corner.

Stan, I was in the midst of it and saw Dave go down and others all around me.  Probably watched as you came to grief.  By some miracle, the way was clear for me so I got a good break on the pack with Landman.....and we never looked back

I have got the cutting photo I was telling you about I will try and post it tonight. By the way from what I remember I came out of the corner with Lester and had a great battle for most of the race.
