The bike reminds me of the bike my old mate Legless Rob built in Yakapari, near Mackay, North Queensland 15 years ago. He started with a basket case '75 250 with a blown gearbox and a T120 650 Triumph engine. Back then in the era prior to the introduction of the pre '78 and Evo classes a '75 Maico was worth virtually nothing as very few of the parts could be used on a pre '75 bike. Rob had been beach racing both a stripped down Triumph Bonneville and his pre '75 VMX Maicos so in a beer infused brainwave formulated in the bar of the Leap Hotel, he decided to build the 'Trico' by fitting the Trumpy engine to the Maico frame. It took a fair bit of cutting, shutting and welding, (some of which I did while on holiday up there in the tropics), but in the end the bike proved to be a formidable weapon on the beach flats and dirt tracks of FNQ. Rob subsequently lost a leg in a road accident which prevented any further racing on the bike. It was sold and disappeared from sight until it was photographed at a NSW bush dirt track meeting a couple of years ago. As plug ugly and politically incorrect as the bike may be, I'm glad it still exists.

Cmon Paul you can't tell me that whacking a Bonnie motor in a late model Maico chassis is a stunning 2500 quid improvement.

Still far be it for me to discourage you, from memory you have an old Maico 490 in the shed, next time she blows just ease Meridans finest in there  ;D ;D.
