KDX 175
« on: September 12, 2009, 09:30:57 pm »
I have just scored myself a KDX 175, I think an A1
Its a very neat original (faded) bike.
Unfortunately it's flywheel is stuffed.
Anyone have one laying around ::)
Or has anyone have a zedder program that can tell me what other models would have the same flywheel?
Tried to pinch the flywheel from my 88 KDX 200 but they are slightly different.

A flywheel should see me at Benalla in a couple of weeks

Pretty sure I've got a spare 200A/B one, if its any help.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Hey Geoff, I've got a nice speedo, reed block and front sprocket I think.
Do you want 'em?

Thanks Nathan, I would take it if I could be sure it fits.
The later 200 is slightly bigger in dia. & has a slighlty bigger shaft size.
I will try & take some measurements tomorrow.

Thanks Tony, I think this one has a good speedo allthough I haven't seen it in daylight yet, It's actually very original & unmolested.

Will show some pictures tomorrow.

According to Zedder, the flywheel is the same for A1, A2 and A3 models of the 175. Nothing else !
I think the software only refers to US models and does not consider UK, Euro or OZ models.

Thanks for the info guys
It's a great little bike, it even looks good in daylight.
Engine No says DX175A but compliance plate says B 12-81

The flywheel is 107mm OD x 39 wide (not including inner spigot) with a 13.7mm hole measured from the ouside at the small end of the taper.

The later model 200 (88) measures 14.7 at the small end of the taper so won't fit.
Nathan / Matt if your flywheel measures similar to mine then I am interested

It has around 9000 K's on the speedo which looks genuine.
Mostly road miles too judging by the tyres.
Apart from the flywheel the only thing missing that I can spot is the rubber tip from the gear lever.
Still has original...
tool bag,
rubber boots on struts & brake torque arm
battery & wiring.
Oh yeah, missing rear indicators. (but I'm not really fussed about that)

The bike is about to go through a comprehensive restoration which will include...
# Fitting a flywheel (if I can find one)
# Adding fuel & ride.

Later plans will include fitting new black hoops & checking all bearings.

Now that's my kind of resto!  :D

I think I have a mag article about this model that I can photocopy for you. Sorry no parts though! Good luck getting it ready for Benalla.

Thanks for looking Matt, yeah the KDX has 4 magnets.
Tried some wreckers but they just laughed at me.
Considered going for the whole KX 125 flywheel & stator as the KDX is 125 based but $400.00 was a bit much without knowing for sure it would work.
Also quoted $80.00 for another broken flywheel with missing magnets :o
Tried Kawasaki but they are NLA.
Not sure I could get the USA one in time for Benalla.
After looking at it closer & playing "jigsaw" with the magnets I figure it's not that bad.
I actually broke the magnets in my 200 in 86 & managed to araldite them back in. Seemed to work okay but I sold it a couple of months later.
I sent my flywheel down to Bert at Small Coil Rewinds today as he has glued them together before.
Quoted me $150.00  Probably could have tried it myself but I figure I am paying him for his knowledge as I would like this bike to be reliable
Will see what he says when he see's it.

Yeah, interested in Magazine articles.
Just read the 1980 Trail & Trash.
Havn't got the ADB's out yet.

You have to get up a lot earlier Tony if you want to beat Cyclegod (otherwise known as E-baygod)
He's already put that one up.
Interesting though that the US one appears to have 3 magnets, I'm pretty sure mine had 4

Were their ever any 175 B models or did the B designation come out with the 200?
