Hi Motomaniac.  This is a custom paint job.
Happy to send more photos so you can check if this is a DT or MX.
I think I have the model right,  but cannot be sure.

Non-original plastics and the colour scheme looks like one of the DT250A's but there is a screw in plastic cap so its a resprayed MX tank. Not Thermoflow shox but otherwise looks pretty original. There's a chunk missing from the rear of the sidecover that can be seen.

There is no difference except for colour between an MX250 (silver grey with yellow stripe with black pinstriping) sand an MX250a (US Yamaha racing Yellow with black and white details) - and this is one of the two.

I'm not sure of what the floral display around the foot pegs is ::).

The MX250b is the monoshock, the real question is what's the difference between a MX250b and the YZ250b :P :-[.

The bike is an MX, not a DT.

I know this because I've seen it, but just from the pic, you can see the following parts that identify it as an MX rather than a DT:

rear guard mounts.
swing arm (no holes for pillion pegs).
side cover, and mount on the frame.
tank.
lower triple clamp.
front hub & rims.
seat.

None of these are impossible to reproduce/swap, but they're all a pretty good guide that the bike is the real deal.

1973 = MX
1974 = MX-A, YZ-A, YZ-B.
1975 = MX-B, YZ-B.

I guess that we should copy the Porsche guys, and talk about the 1973 model as being the "pre-A".

Dunno whether its a 73 or a 74.
AFAIK, the two main differences between the years are:
1. 30 vs 34mm carby.
2. Colour (which is obviously not relevant for this bike).

The train-spotters may know of more.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Nathan's right about the carby & colour being the only difference between the 73 & 74 models.
{good poop :D}
i did read somewhere ages ago {lost in time} the prefix of 364..... is common to both with the earlier {silver 73} having a lower number. whatever/wherever it was i read showed the transition numbers from the 73 to 74 but i never saved it as i didn't own one then.
