I dont have any formal proof at hand , however I would be fairly comfortable in saying IRC was the tyre of choice for Yamaha's for quite a few years over that period.
YZ125E, RM250T

Is it way too small? A bit of work with the heat gun or hot water could soften it enough to fit if it's close. Maybe some rubber friendly grease as well.

I bought and still have a YZ125E and I am sure it came with Dunlops. I still have the original front tyre somewhere that I took off about 8 years ago. The guy I bought the bike off still runs/owns the shop and he'll remember so I'll ask him.

Definitely, well almost, Dunlop. They used IRC on their trail bikes but Dunlop on the Motocrossers. Apparantly they where an OEM petten too, you could only buy them through Yamaha. I actually have the part numbers if you are interested.

I'm not pretending to know the answer, but I've got an awful lot of one particular type of Yokohama front tyres - they come on the YZ125C/D/Es I've bought, and never on anything else.

It wouldn't surpise me if Yamaha fitted whatever tyres they had at the time - you may well find that the E models were fitted with several different brands from the factory.

Nathan,
Not many would still have original tyres on. The info I got was from the guy I bought the bike off in 1978. He still owns Motorcycleland in Ballarat. The tyre was an OEM pattern and could only be bought from Yamaha. He said they were alright to break the bike in but very few ever bought the same tyre again. As I said I still have the original front tyre here somewhere and would bet my left knacker (Not that it would be of much use to anyone, god knows it's no good to me) that it is Dunlop.

Hmm, some of them certainly seem like the originals - typically rooted, typically on bikes that are on the standard bore or first oversize.

It is entirely possible that they're replacements from back in the day, but it seems odd that I keep getting these particular Yokies, and I only get them on a really narrow range of bikes.

Here's a pic of a YZ125C sales brochure. It looks like a Dungflop or IRC to me?
I guess the bikes of the brochures are pre-production bikes, so may not be 100% too.

Similar photo (but crappier) - may be of interest to the real train-spotters?

The original question was for 78 YZ E, That's what I bought and commented on. Would not have a clue what came out on a 76.
Plus what is in the broucher is not what you always get. I have copies of the original brouchers for the E's so I will have a look. Maybe different dealers got different tyres, dont know but my dealer said Dunlop when asked the question and it wasn't, "Were Dunlops the standard tyre on the E's?" It was "What were on the E's when they came out?

Either way not that much of a big deal, me thinks!
