IT465 Front End swap
« on: September 01, 2009, 06:32:29 pm »
Hi everyone, i've asked this on the IT forum, but it can't hurt to ask here too.
I am thinking about changing the front to a disc brake set-up. I don't want USD forks or anything like that. What i'd really like to do is simply slide a set of 38mm legs into the existing clamps and fit the disc equipped wheel in etc. Is this going to be simple, or am I pushing it up hill :-[.
I have zilch experience with what will fit. I was thinking DT200,TT250/350 or TT/XT600. I'm really after others experience with this, I would prefer to stick with Yamaha parts if possible, but i'm open to all idea's. I was hoping to keep the speedo drive as well.

What do you guys recommend?

Cheers
Adam

TT250/350/600 have 43mm forks, which will go onto the IT using the TT (or later It, or YZ) triple clamps.

The DT200Rs have 41 or 43mm forks (depending on what you read). The fairly rare DT200L (with the single sided radiator) might have 38s, but I doubt that the forks would be much good.

XT250 should work? But soft springs, soft valving and not much travel.

I've seen a whole TS250X front end grafted into an earlier IT, but again, they're a trail-bike fork so they're probably a step backward on an enduro bike.

Personally, I'd got for the mid~late 1980s YZ/TT/IT200 front end.

Thanks for the responses guys  ;D, just what I wanted to know. Are the late 80's YZ forks 38's or 43's? I'll have to chase up a set of 43mm clamps if this is going to work by the sounds of it.

Thanks again,
Adam

By 1984, all of the adult YZs had 43mm forks. They kept using 43s until they brought in USDs in 1989.

Triple clamps to suit 43mm forks are pretty much interchangable. There's a few minor variations in colour and bar mounts, but I think they'd settled on fork spacing and offset and everything else. It would be worth checking, still.
