The 84 yz is certainly a good bike but over in the good ol USofA the CR250 won most tests. At least the ones that I have.RM's have great suspension - Maico's handling is legendary eyc etc.
Myself I like my all powerfull REDROCKET - now what to do about the rear suspension??

I reckon the CR-REs are the most popular nowdays.
Funnily enough, there seems to be heaps more YZ250Ks out there than YZ250Ls - particularly weird when you consider that the K was a good bike in 83, while the L was a really good bike in 84.
The KXs and RMs exist, but only in very small numbers
Don't think I've ever seen an 84 Maico MC250 in the flesh.

Edit: Fixing stupid typo.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Don't know the HEAVEN member's name (very slack of me) but he brings his '84 250cc Maico to heaven events and does the Saturday practice laps on it.
I have an '85 250.

The 84 CR250 was a great bike I miss my old one. But they suffer the rotton water pump, bottom frame rails wear through and pogo shock all which of can be fixed!

Don't know all of the differences but one of the major changes was a disc brake on the front compared with drum on the '84. Both had drum rear brakes.
Anyone else know the differences?

In 1985 the crankcases significantly changed on the SC(SuperCross) 250’s, distinguishable by the move to one front engine mounting bolt instead of two as on the 84 model. There are also numerous subtle transmission improvements in the 1985 model as noted by the differences in the part number listings between 1984 and 1985. 1986 saw the 250 have another massive increase in HP with the introduction of the diaphragm operated exhaust power valve. The 1986 model was also the first year that rear single shock suspension actually matched the ability of the brilliant ’84’85’86 front suspension. The front fork stanchions and damper internals also share the same part numbers for the years of 84 85 86, except for the lower alloy sliders of course which changed when Maico introduced the disk brake front end on it’s 1984 and a 1/2 models as a factory option.

Maico never waited or sat back to the end of any year to put new innovations into production. Indeed there are many so called “half models”! Just a few for
example; -The 1974.5 with it’s LTR suspension.
                -The 1975.5 “New Generation” transmission.
-The 1979.5  400 and 440 models introduced the new lightweight
Crankshafts mid year, whose part number then became common to all
future 400 440 Magnums, Mega Two and Alpha One 490 models.
-The Mega Two that introduced the stronger twin side plated "roundback"
back bone frames, that don't crack, in that area.
Incidentally when Australia and United states got the “Sand spider” in 1983, Germany got the same bike but it was called the “Alpha Two” there.
Then Australia ended up with the "GME" while the US ended up with the "M STAR", and now finally we all have MAICO's again.
Regards Mick.

I have the ADB with the 1985 euro 250 shootout. It basically says about the Maico that is has alot of changes ,more powerfull motor and the frame geometry is all different.Apparently the Marsch brothers went back to 78/79 type dimensions -" important areas such as weight distribution, wheelbase and rake/trail are back to those established years ago" so in theory the 85 should handle as good as those legendary 79's. :)

I have the 84 Trail & Track shootout of the 4 jap MX 250's,  it says thay they are all great bikes.  The RM still handled the best but had a slow motor, The YZ and CR were both very good all round bikes with the KX just behind in most areas.  They awarded the best bike to the KX only due to the fact that the KX was significantly cheaper than the others in 84....

The '84 YZ would have to be the pick now however. Plentifull parts (cheap) and very few problems. I want one..... 8)

Yes I like the YZ - they absolutely fly and look awesome. However I have just started restoring an 84 KX250 so I better wave the green flag lol
