So I’m new to this VMX stuff, but I’m certainly not new to motorcycling. I reckon it’s in your blood. My grandfather still holds the record for the fastest speedway lap around Kingaroy showgrounds (although they haven’t raced there for years). I'd love to own the same bike he had one day
It all started for me with a Deltek grassgrub with a JAP 2 stroke motor (when they made mower motors). I still remember the rope start with the spam tin with 2 cupboard clip covering the part where the rope connected . The old man (who was not into bikes) was concerned about it eating my leg
.
After that it was a DT100 which was the biggest heap of crap ever
– I just could not get it to GOOO
. I spent heaps of time riding my cousin’s Z50 and my mates RM80N.
After the DT100 I bought an RM 370B that I loved
. The only event I’ve ever ridden in was a trials day on the RM370. Believe me it was not suited to the occasion
but was awesome in the barrel race. I’d love to get another one one day. The RM had obviously put the rod through the cases at the front ‘cause it had a piece of metal araldited over the hole. I didn’t care at that stage ‘cause it went like the clappers. I never had to touch that thing (apart from a thrown ring) and I think that’s part of the reason I know SFA now. Got hauled up to the headmasters a few times ‘cause the nearest place to ride happened to be my high school oval.
I went away from bikes for a while and later got into road bikes (’87 GSXR1100 and now ’99 Fireblade).
Funnily enough the thing that got me into dirt bikes again was Crusty Demons. Having an 18 month old and one on the way the budget was very limited, but I wanted a bike to ride around the farm. I had never been impressed with the modern bikes and started searching for an old 250 to ride around the farm – something with a bit of class. I rang the local wrecker looking for a ’79 Honda (not knowing what they were worth) and he said he had a 1981 YZ 250. I was dodgy on Yamahas after my DT100 experience, but I bought it (paid too much), found OZVMX on google and the rest is history. Now I’m working on getting the whole H series and bought a 125J with a H motor. I’m loving learning all about the mechanics of these things and restoring them and am looking forward to my first race on the 125 H/J – hopefully soon.
The guys on here have helped me so much already and I express my sincere thanks
.
So that’s me – newbie wannabe
