Woohoo, got me a slide scanner
« on: July 26, 2009, 03:10:34 pm »
Bought a Canon MP980 multi function thing - printer, copier, scanner. Chose it cos it also scans slides, and today sat down and ran off a couple of the old slides. I can see I need to experiment with settings to get a good result, and in any case it probably doesn't scan as well as a specialist 35mm film scanner, but at least I can digitise them well enough to look at again. Being slides I haven't really looked at them in years and I have hundreds of them.

Here's a few I did today.

Yeah, it's neat seeing them all again, it's years since I looked at them. I have a lot of MX, Enduro and Dirt Track from the early 80s in Queensland. It'll take me ages to scan them all in but I'll do it. I'll share some of the better ones as I do them...

The scanner is a multifunction Canon MP980, about $450 I think. We needed a new printer and I convinced the finance manager that for a few extra dollars we could get the slide scanning function as well.

Have you got any shots from the 1980 3 hour at Action Park?

Yep, the Moates shot is at the Melanesia 2000, I think it was called. Not sure of the year, I'll have to have a look.

No 1980 3-Hour photos I don't think, but I'll see what I have as I go through them. I didn't get into the photography until about 1980/81 and the majority of pics will be 1982-85. I do have some prints of a 3-hour in about 1980 when Hansford rode though.

Michael, you're a nice young bloke and I'm stoked that someone your age is interested in old bikes but could you please start using capital letters, full stops ending actual sentences and commas and apostrophes where needed? I imagine it's accepted  to use such grammar when texting but on a forum post it makes it bloody hard to decipher what you're actually talking about without any punctuation.

I'm not telling you this for the sake of laying shit, I'm doing it so more of us can understand your posts. Mate, you've only just left school so you surely must remember what the English teachers taught you?

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I had to read Michaels post four times before it made any sense  ::). Now, back to the slide scanner post.

A couple more.  I've been experimenting with settings and have discovered a whole new world of colour balance correction, adjusting tones and saturation and so on. Sadly I haven't a clue what all that means and most of my efforts don't improve things much, but I am getting closer to an acceptable result. 1985 3-Hour.

Here Here, Firko.
I constantly say the same thing to my 2 teenagers.
Please don't take it the wrong way Michael, because that's not how it is meant. Having someone your age interested is refreshing.
Great Photo's by the way Graeme, especially the Dirt Track ones, back to you.

Yep, this is the Old Photos and English 101 thread.

#8, I have about a dozen or so pics from the 1980 3-Hour including a few of Hansford. Anyone special you were looking for?

Graeme,

Given your enthusiasm to post pics, I have obviously taken your ruling on June 19th about pics too literally.  I suppose that's what being a novice is all about.

I followed your suggestion and then followed Jock's guide, only I left the photos in photobucket and posted the URL address.  Do I take it that the photos can be uploaded into the post now????    ::)

Firko; notice the punctuation.  It's close to correct even if I know jack ... about computers.

No, I have got attaching photos turned off cos I am running out of space. But I am thinking of upgrading my server package so that may change. Because I own the site though I can upload my own photos...

However, you can certainly insert images into posts the way I am if you have the photos hosted elsewhere. In other words, host the pics somewhere else, then use the image URL in the Insert Image action when you areb posting. That works and looks just the same as mine do above.
