Maico model question
« on: July 19, 2009, 03:06:55 pm »
A mate of mine has a maico 490 enduro 1981 or 82 model thats hes holding onto for his cousin to pick up,but when he was looking under the gear box he noticed a spare gear box lug that should be bolted to the frame, but there is no bracket on the frame and looks like there never was one there ???  all the other engine mounts look right and have not been changed , could it be a 250 bottom end with a 490 top end ??? or could it be a 250 frame with a 490 motor and gear box ???or is the 250 and 490 gear boxes the same but diffrent frames

IT was brougt un seen from ebay, i have the frame nos..  TYP GS 400T
                                                                            BAUJAHR 19
                                                                            Fahrgest.NR 2510225
                                                                            HUBRAUM 384CCM
                                                                            LEERGEW 720KG
                                                                            7-UL.6ES.GEW 225KG
The numbers on the gear box are, GT 2510028
on the barrel it has stamped R352 but there are some other numbers that are non readable ,and has a X marked on the barrell to if this helps any help would be great

81and 82/ 490 and 250 cases are the same .you can put a 490 barrell on 250 cases (but you have to change a few things) the extra engine mount on the back off the cases  is when the went to 82 frame and the linkage set up bolted through the back off the engine i think ive got one some were out there give me a min and i get some pics

come to think on it the bottom rear engine mount had a bolt through it when i pull the 82/ 490 to pieces ,but it may have been bolted through the linkage set up or just to the frame but it was definetatly had a bolt through it  i havent got that frame it went out as scrap

So looks like its right, if the 250 and 490 81,82 cases are the same, so the bike is a 490 81 and could have a 490 or 250 gear box in it but they are the same any way so does that sound right :-\

My 81 maicos have that same extra engine mount sticking out on the bottom, it's normal.
