Introducing

New to the forum.  I started racing in Port Pirie in 1968 and my first riding number was 593 (original, eh?).  Have competed in every discipline (except ice racing) but motocross (wasn't that scrambles way back then???) has been my passion.

Have spent some time in motorcycle racing administration (MSA) and event organisation (500GP, WSBK etc) but never far from a ride, but finding work committments too easily interfering with the real meaning of life.  What first began as an interest in collecting models of bikes that I have raced is now turning towards racing them.

Welcome Chris. Great to have another old 60s motocross victim on board . I started in 1969 so you're a year up on me.
Is old Bob Vourmard still slinking around Pirie? How about Flinky? One of the best vintage Nats I attended was the Pirie event back in the late 90s.

If it's the same Bob Vourmard I knew, he was living in the Barossa but passed away a few years ago.

Bob Voumard is living on Yorke Peninsular (Maitland) and when I spoke with him last year he was as fit as a fiddle (my first racing bike was his Greeves).  Flinky is still getting around Pirie and until last year was riding vets, but a back problem has forced him into retirement; sad for some-one so young  :'(

Bob Voumard was one of the original South Australian vintage racers with a nice collection of CZs and a beautiful Weslake Metisse that recently changed hands again in WA. Bob was the 1969 Australian 250 Motocross champion aboard a white tank GYT DT1 which puts him in history as the first to win an Aussie motocross title on a Japanese bike (I think). He's an interesting character, one of those lovable rogue type of blokes, a deft hand with the ladeez!. He rang me at about 11.30 pm about a year or so ago...pissed as a newt, I never did understand what he wanted!

Bad luck about Flinkys back. He was as fast as shite on his vintage Maicos and was the first bloke I saw with a 326 Maico conversion. Shit that bike was quick. He used to drop in on this forum from time to time, but haven't noticed him onboard for quite a while. I can't remember his handle but he contributed a bit of info when we discussed the 326 Maico conversion.

So far in the vintage stable, a Greeves 250 MX4 (first race bike), 1969 CZ 360 (my actual bike, in need of restoration, which I shared with my father in 1969 and then it became mine in 1970 when he purchased a 250), 1974 CZ400 (my actual bike now being restored) and Bultaco Mk7 360.

(The "modern" stable includes 00 Yam WRF400, 99 XR400 and 07 CRF450, but I just can't get used to the extra 2 strokes).

I am looking for 76 Honda CR 125, 76/77 Honda CR250 (an interesting story behind that one), a 78 Yamaha YZ400E, and a 1982 CR480.

  Hey Chris and Firko, i came across this article and had to reply to the rumours you blokes have been spreading about us (LOL).  Get reports on Bob from time to time and its all good since his prostate problem .  I have never raced a more fierce competitor and his prescence made people know it was going to be a serious affair at the pointy end of the field.  Firko, Yamaha? (you wish) Bob won his Aussie title in Collie W.A on a 250 CZ ,your time is about right. Not too sure of the bikes he has left but Vic (Saccottio) bought some to put alongside mine.  One of them was that 75 Falta still in the crate. My health is good now after a bout  with leukemia and am still riding (could you get better therapy)    ........cheers Geoff

G'day Flinky, sorry to hear of your battle with Leukemia but glad to hear you're up and at 'em again. I hope I get a chance to catch up with you (and Bob)  at Crystal Brook Nats next year. As far as Voumard's Aussie title, I had a long yarn to Bob regarding that win and he most definitely told me it was on a kitted DT1. I'll also quote Jim Scaysbrooks book Australia's Motorcycling Heritage where he described the meeting ..........
"Held at Collie on the site of a disused coal mine, the Australian Scramble Championships drew an enormous crowd on a day with intermittent showers. On a very different pair of machines Ray Fisher won the 125 on a Kawasaki and the Unlimited on his trusty Metisse. In the larger class he efeated Richie Kings and Jim Dowsett. On a race kitted DT1, South Australian Bob Voumard gave Yamaha their first Australian Scramble title, winning from Peter Heywood (Greeves) . Local honour was upheld in the 350 class by Gordon Renfree (Husqvarna) after many challengers retired, while Dave Basham (360 Greeves) took out the 500 class ahead of Fisher and Voumard. Murray Williams scored a double sidecar victory".

MA history archives also list Bob Voumard as riding a Yamaha. Maybe he was riding the CZ in the 500 class Geoff?

Its all good !! getting your years mixed thats all..
Bob won on a Yammie in 68 and won in under 250cc in 69, this year of 69 could of been the CZ.
The articles in the above link dont say where the CZ placed.
