never had problems with ultimate over here. are you guys who are having trouble with it and other high ocatane fuels aware that you have to retune your carbs/change plugs to suit those fuels? each time you change to different fuels you need to re tune your bike to suit the fuel your using

I used to add about 400-500ml of "Methyl Benzene" to 10 litres of good fuel and you could feel the difference.It was widely used at Dirt Track events I attended in the 70-80's.I only ever ran it in 2 strokes.I would get it from a local fuel wholesaler.BP from memory. It would require a log-book at least these days I imagine to obtain-if at all.

we used to use tolulene in a race rally car, that might be still available over the counter

Tolulene/methyl benzine at best will give you 1 or maybe 2 octane points, and  SFA detonation resistance.100mls of acetone per 10 litres will do as good a job.
You want some serious HP you need Elf Moto 124.FULL STOP.

then there is always the old way of doing it.

Turn the throttle more and back it off later into the corners. that will always do more than any fuel you will buy/make.  :)

i just use standard pump unleaded and find that fine, i always use Mobil though !

Hi Guys,
I think Hoony hit the nail on the head. This is vintage motocross not Grand Prix Road Racing or F1 Karting. The engines in the majority old bikes run just fine on standard unleaded. Sure there are some that have always had problems but playing mad scientists with known carcinogens shouldn't be encouraged.

Sometimes a little knowledge is a dangerous thing and if you think playing with Toludene/methyl benzine is good practice then I hope you are taking suitable precautions [if not you could be in serious trouble down the track].

If the optimum fuel really means that much to you then call Tony Hatton and get some ELF Moto 124 as Lozza suggested. Its designed specificly for bikes and is about the best legal fuel you can get, it is absolutely consistent and mixes with oil superbly.

Most good tuners favour using a consistent fuel instead of chasing your tail looking for a univeral panacea. If this is what you want get some ELF and live happily ever after. It is also much, much safer than trying to make your own.

I'm not trying to poop your party, but please be careful.

However racing is racing, most racers given the opportunity will go for the race win and/or go to great lengths improve their machinery.Considering the stupid money people pay for some of Don and Gary's period crap, using decent fuel and tuning for it, is a very cost effective way of lifting throttle response and the engines output.Shaking a can and pouring it into the tank is pretty simple, requires no tools or skill.
Hoony I can gaurantee that with a engine in a resonable state of tune, that after using 110 ,no way would you go back to 91 ULP.

I agree Lozza, I wont be going back to using Servo pump fuel after using Av-Gas. My choice to use Av-Gas had very little to do with performance, although the engine does perform better with it, but had more to do with engine preservation. No detonation, runs noticeably smoother, cleaner burn and I'm sure there are a lot of other technical sounding reasons why its better to use but the bottom line is I LIKE IT  ;D

Hey Lozza i dont know about Hoony but i have had the big honda go past me a couple o times and he  doesnt need any more grunt,   4th gear starts at Barrabool . Faaarrrrkk .

Well i changed my fuel and tryed BP ultimate still the same oil castrol 2T , on the weekend in my YZ400E and it did make a difference ,no pinging and very smooth power . I had gone away from it after a batch went off after being left in the tanks for a while and running 6 bikes on it i dont like throwing left over fuel away , The only trouble i noticed was Emma's CR80 was hard to start although i had just rebuilt and jetted her carby ,Once goin it was very fast ,maybe to fast for my little girl so not sure why it was yet.So i imagine goin up another 10 actane would make as big a difference again .
