DC Plastics
« on: October 11, 2007, 07:16:13 pm »
Hi Guys.
Without putting yourself in a position where you may get sued ::), can people please give their views on DC plastics (white ones if you want to be specific).  I have seen a couple of sets.  Some RM plastics I have been shown have been top finish (nice and shiney), but the colours (OK yellows) have been very slightly different.  You probably wouldn't notice from the front guard to the back.  Others are great colour match (white), but had a dull finish.
Comments please.  I know they have the market pretty well cornered for range - there range is excellent and covers stacks of models.  Just looking for peoples' experiences.
Can you polish them and make them look shiney or what??  What about fitment - easy or not?  Is quality consistent ?
What about Extreme YZ - I've heard they are tardy - is that right?.
Are there others ??  I thought other restorers may benefit from this tread too.  That's what it's all about - sharing experiences so others hopefully don't make the same mistakes as you have. ;)

Multi-Mount / Concourse Parts (Scott) will be the winner if/when they get around to making the re-pros. I saw some of his prototypes of early Yamaha plastics (front guard, front number plates and fuel tanks), and they were very good - miles ahead of the quality of DC stuff.
The colour, shape, and finish were all a lot better.

But Scott still wasn't happy with the prototypes...

The proposed prices were quite good too.

So I've been prepared to wait until he gets the production run happening.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

If your restoring forget DC plastics (excellent and hard wearing for racing though) X-tremeYZ's stuff certainly looks alot better but I would recommend phoning them up rather than doing some kind of online deal (I like their tripple clamps  ;D)

for my '79 PE (suzuki yellow) I have cleaned up the originals, sourced NOS, and fibreglass, and also a pair from DC plastics.

The DC fenders appear to be absolutely first-class plastics, with great finish. HOWEVER, the colour is not Suzuki yellow. Too safety-yellow - sock-in-eye-too-bright. Apparently the sheet plastic they use cannot be got in the precisely right shade. For a non-resto racer, absolutely great. For an as-new restoration, not really going to feel 'right'.

The fibreglass stuff I got from a local - Scott Bennett's "Prix-Historic Fibreglass" up in norther NSW.
I think it's Tenterfield. (eBay seller "Classic_cyberglass" or email [email protected]). Good quality, looks fine and good colour. Not bad at all - if you're ok with having fibreglass guards, side-covers and number-plate, then definately worth thinking about.

Now as to Yamaha white and DC... don't know. Sorry.

Thanks Guys.
I remember your 465 vividly cyclegod - where they DC or XYZ (or something else)??
Luke, I had never considered fibreglass, but thinking about it it's certainly another option - obviously less forgiving than plastic, but you wouldn't be able to beat it for finish.

DC plastics at the time, they have actually improved after some early fitting problems turned up in the first run. The Maier stuff is shiny and a little better finished but I haven't tried any for fit.

I've looked at the Maier ones.  I'm just not totally sure about the shape of them :-\.  They seem to have gone off and done their own thing as far as style goes - always a brave move.  You can tell by the photos of them that the finish is excellent though.
Nathan has me very interested in the ones Multimount is looking at producing.  Hopefully he will try to stick as close as possible to original shape.

my little mx runs a DC front with a MCS rear.
front is good for riding but i wouldn't go one for the immaculate resto.
the rear MCS is top quality and heaps of blokes seem to be using them on the pre-75 stuff as they just look right for so many different bikes and at around $30 each they're hard to overlook.

Maier do replicas of a lot of fenders late &0's onwards so if you get one for a 1980 YZ 125 or whatever it should be right. i wouldnt go by photos on websites, as many places use one universal photo for all there applications. eg all the YZ's may show the same white front fender.

My personal take on repo plastics for (Yamaha YZ's) is that no one has got it right yet. Maier seem to have there corners and bends to rounded and in the case of the YZ250G/H sidecovers are wrong on the airbox side, they havnt got the breather holes and the indents for the number boards are non existant. There is no bracing on the inside and the exhaust side doesnt fit very well.-conclusion, to me they look like cheap imitations.
DC plastics look like they have been molded with orange skin molds and in some cases havnt even got the same look/shape as the orginal part. For the price of repo plastics I would like to see them looking and fitting alot better.
 :( :( :(
Well anyway thats what I think of them.
If at first you dont succeed, give up and drink beer

I used DC plastics on both of the 465 YZs my son and I are doing. His is Yellow and mine is white. Yamaboy Junior even used one of those tank skin covers in yellow over his ratty white tank and you can't tell. I'm happy but these bikes aren't concours restos either.

I'll see what I can do, both bikes are at my sons place on the central coast and I'm in Sydney so as soon as I can get up there I'll take some and post them.

Thanks mate.  A few good shots of the fit and finish would be great if you can get 'em
Apart from that I'm always interested in restos other people have done - concourse or not.
Any resto is a good resto  ;)
