« on: May 25, 2009, 05:16:31 pm »
as is often the case while searching for a book which still eludes me i found to my delight the above titled book which i had given up as lost forever after a fruitless search some time ago. this book is of great value to any m/cycle owners who want to know what gives..it is probably still in print..this copy was published by floyd clymer los angeles. unfortunately there is no isbn No. or date of print run or edition No. I purchased my copy pre 1966 at a cost of  6pounds 2and six which was bulk dollars!     all i want to find now is what did i do with my yamy RT1 book!  cheers wally.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!

Hi Wally,
That book sounds great.
Does it talk about fork and shock design.
Oil flow with calculations to determine rebound and compression?

Wally,

I assume you be talking about the Phil Irving book. Mine is ISBN 0-85113-075-5, 5th ed'n 1973. It is a classic, but while the fundamentals of engineering don't change, its really 50's stuff & quite dated in many ways. eg discussion on springing & damping includes rubber springs & friction dampers.

There are other more modern books available now, eg "The Racing Motorcycle" & "Motorcycle Design & Technology".

all true JC just remember that im a fan of bill haley and the comets as well as phil irving, being in my teens during the fifties. a lot of the detail is dated but basically it's an engineering book which deals with design parameters and those principles which are peculiar to single track vehicles.it also demonstrates where specific designs first appeared and showed how there is nothing new under the sun,for instance centre point steering which was around on the near-a-car from the twenties and has been 'invented' a few times since.... if it can be found in the library i recommend it to everyone interested in motorcycles cheers wally....ps how do you do 'smiley faces' etc?
