KTM Compliance Plates
« on: May 22, 2009, 12:26:52 PM »
I have two '84 model GS250's and one '85 model GS250 but only one of the '84s has a compliance plate?, the other two show no evedence of a compliance plate ever being fitted.

So what gives  ??? did Floody just compliance bikes that were sold to be registered and not otheres?

do pre 85 bikes need a compliance plate to be road registered?

They are all GS for sure, I have Jimmy Ellis' 1984 MX250 and they were a bit different to the GS models.

Funny this but I looked at a 89 250 MX recently in perth that the owner had from new and it had a compliance plate on it  ???

MX is different to MXC, and they're both different to GS.

They were very... erratic with compliance plates back in the day. My old '88 "125GS" was a 100% MXer with (non-functional) lights and a complaince plate. My current 89 250GS has a complaince date of very early 1988 (way before the bike's spec was finalised, and way before there was a single pre-proddy example in Australia).

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

OOOOhhhh my god. where did you get Jimmys 250, whats it like. Where are the pics. Yes the MX is a different animal to the MXC. At that time from what I have seen & know most common was MXC & GS. The MX was far & few between. Thats why I am getting my 86 250 MX from the US.

My old 85 300 had the compliance stuck on with silastic - no other form of fixing was evident. I thought it was suss, but VicRoads had no problem with it....

The date on the compliance plate is the compliance date - nothing more or less.

Most imported vehicles are built well before the compliance plate is fitted - and then the date stamped in, is when the plate is fitted to the vehicle.

Eg: All of the 1970s Mazdas had the date stamped by the dealer. And different dealers stamped the plates either when the car arrived in their yard, or when the car was sold - its possible to see some cars with 100% legitimate, factory fitted compliance plates that are literally years after Mazda stopped making them...

Similarly, my 1994 model TM125 was complianced in 1998. The date on the compliance plate says that its a 1998 model.  ::)

What I'm trying to say, is that the whole compliance plate thing is FAR less of a big deal than the RTA/VicRoads/RUS etc say that it is. I wouldn't go messing with one for the sake if it, but there's a LOT more factory/importer dodgyness going on than the authorities would ever believe.

This includes Bert Flood sticking them on with sikaflex, using 88 plates on 89 model bikes, using 400 4-stroke plates on 500 2-strokes, etc etc.

The japs are far less dodgy. Remember that we're only a couple of months away from seeing 2010 models at the local dealers - obviously those "2010 model" bikes will have been made, complianced distributed and sold in 2009 - so both the manufacturing and compliance dates will be in the second half of 2009.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Nathan S is right with com plates. Check out a grey import bike or car. Say you look at a 91 GTIR Pulsar it can have an Australian com plate stamped 2005. As this is the year it was imported & com in Australia. Also where are the pics of Jimmies bike?

The bike is tucked away right at the front of a shipping container with about 20 other bikes behind it right now, it is on the list of bikes to restore next year, as soon as I retract it I will post some pics.

Though I would be interested if anyone here has any pics of the bike is '84 so that I can get idea of how it looked when Jimmy rode it, it would certainly help for an authentic resto...

Relax Evo, Jimmy rode Yamaha, KTM, and Can-Am, amongst other brands, but was most well-known for his development of the Can-Am 250s. He was hard as nails, and world-class on his day, and is apparently still having the odd gallop in WA. Form is temporary, but class is permanent....onya, Jimmy !! ;)
