Koni Shocks servicing
« on: October 08, 2007, 11:10:57 am »
Anyone have any suggestions on getting my rear shocks serviced/reworked? Who and where?

I have a set of Koni's on a Husky 450 that have no rebound (virtually no bounce at all - they come back sloooowly like the screen door at our holiday house back in the 70s).

I know I'll get messages telling me to upgrade - but I really like the look and vintage feel of the old Konis.

Im in Melb (thanks vandy010).

I had my Konis rebuilt and they failed, i used them again after another service on the weekend meet an now they are pissing oil out of the top adjuster this time and neither shaft seems to have any rebound at all and slam like a poooooned 70s screen door, if yours are slow on the rebound let me swap you, i want slow rebound not pogo.  Im dying to find any normal twins shocks that offer true rebound adjustment, they all seem to be all compression dialed and the rates dont seem to change anyway ?

Do they actually make a twin shock thats pre 75 legal that has rebound adgustment ?  I had an "off track expert" tell me at the race meet when he saw it leaking you cant use adjustable shocks on a 2 stroke cause it vibrates the valves /seals out, now call me crazy but i have never heard that story, i would have thought the 3 ft air pounding back to earth would cause more dysfunction., but im willing to bow to the brains trust here.

Is there any truth to this story i cant see it, but might save me making the same mistake if it is.  may have saved me the 100 bucks i wasted getting them fixed, maybe look at another brand ?

Also on a side note how pre 75 legal are Valve emulators and Gas filled for that matter???

Well i had to ask that guy runing the Dt forks about 3 time over the last year and every time a little more come out, cause nothing pre75 runs that flat or has that kinda rebound.

LW what forks did you buy the emulators for ? do they just slide in or do you need to machine them ?

Freaky...It's all too easy again. Youre in Adelaide so give Walter at YSS a call. He makes emulators as well as the best shocks in the business. As for the Konis Huskyrider, I like 'em too and have used them for decades but this is the new century and technology has moved on. YSS and and even obsolete Works shocks are so much better it's not worth rebuilding. If you really need to get your Konis working though get on to.........

82 PE 250. yes they go right in and sit on top of damper rods pefectly. i measured all my parts first and checked them against the Race Tech web site fitting guide to find the best fitting emulator for my forks. i then found a ebay seller who sells them real cheap. i have not fitted them yet. i cant even see how the work yet. they have a allen head bolt that when tightened it puts tension on a spring but i cant actually see what that does.

i guess you could make them if you knew what spring rates to use what shim thickness and all the other technical requirements but i figured why bother when i can just buy them straight off the shelf and they have been tested and designed by a supension guru (Paul Thede)

LWC i found out them Race tech emulators correct are only $149usd and the part number for the Yamaha 34mm forks is  FEGV 3001 OD is 23.8mm.   You are correct about the fork internal contents; Spring, spacer (maybe), damping rod & bottoming cone. Fork ID is 26mm, the tubes are really thick on the old stuff!

Freaky our PD valves are fully legal and only cost $160.00 A$ per pair.
Rebound adjustable shocks are also pre75 legal , as long as the travel does not exeed the 102 mm at rear axel.

whats PD ? and for the rear at axle or the actual shaft minus the spring ?
talk to me more ?

i know what luke put in those Dt forks when he was at hoey's and ive seen them work on the track a few times now, im convienced about there ridability, the DT360 was the only bike i couldnt catch/hold out on the TM250 and its ability to hold much higher speeds through its good suspention/handling was its major ingredient :'(

thats good you worked out what one you needed. as long as it will fit inside your leg thats ok. sometimes you may have to chamfer the inside of the fork spring and make up a short spacer if there isnt a emulator to fit properly on your damper rod top. PD valves are just the YSS version of the Race tech emulators

i spoke to that MAtt guy and he tells me they are the same as the RD350 ?? any way he mentioned somthing about a spacer and said he would throw one in ? remains to be seen what turns up, seeems that one is the same as the TM250 so i wouldnt mind getting one of Walter also and doing a bit of a face off on them to see how they work both work in RL.  To install and how they perform on the track.

I found out I had these Koni shocks. I didn’t know what they were as they had remote reservoirs but a little investigation found the word Koni and the number 23X – 1087 806 on the body. Does anyone know much about them? Are they aftermarket or would of they originally been fitted to a certain bike from the factory? I reckon ive seen an orange Can Am in VMX magazine with these shocks fitted. By the looks of it they were originally red bodys with red reservoirs. It looks like you can get into the body to replace seals but to me it doesn’t look like you can remove the hoses and get in to the reservoir. On the end of the reservoir there is a allen head screw but I dont know how you would get gas into there, and there is no schrader valve for re-gasing. Would the spacer between the 2 springs be original or is that some dodgy modification? Are these shocks fully rebuildable?

I don’t know what im going to do with these, they were just sitting on a PE I got and for 2 yrs I thought they were KYB shocks until I scraped the paint off and saw Koni stamped on them. They look a bit like junk but I might hang onto them for a project one day.

Some of the old Koni had very small holes in the damping piston, they get blocked very easily. A good service should bring them back to life!(Hoey Racing 0882623600 approx.$80pr)
