Which PE175 models qualify for pre-78 VMX?
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:43:01 am »
I am new to this forum and VMX, but as I used to ride and race a PE175, I am interested in getting another for some VMX and Vinduro fun.  Can anyone clarify for me please which models qualify for pre-78 VMX.  I gather from the GCRs that later than 1977 models comply if that model was essentially unchanged.

So is it only the C model, or is the N model also eligible?

many thanks
Graham

pre-78 - ergo B models.. I assume that would be the PE250B.
Would the C fit into pre-78??

There was no 175B, only C,N,T,X,Z,D,E (78-84)

NONE. ONLY PE that qualifies is the 1977 PE250 B

78,79,80,81 PE175 would fit EVO class. (air cooled, drum brakes, no linkage suspension)
Wanted - 1978 TS185 frame or frame&motor. Frame # TS1852-24007 up to TS1852-39022

So why do the GCRs state:

18.7.9 Tables of Machines and Components –
Pre- 1978 125- 250cc
18.7.9.1 Certain 126-250cc machines built up to
and including the 1977 model year that
made up the first generation long-travel
motorcycles. Eligible machines include:

Suzuki RM, TM, PE 175 & 250 1975-77

I guess that doesn't mean it is eligible though  :-[  and it is just a GCR error.  Oh well - so much for hope and dreams.   Looks like the Evo class for me then, but I wanted to qualify for the age group racing.

Thanks for the replies  ;D

the book is wrong, no 77 175's exist. That mistake i imagine will be fixed up on next print run. No one has probably picked that up until now

For Vinduro there is no year classes yet as the events are all non competive fun type events. only reauirement is to be pre 85 model and have lights fitted.

no worries, glad to help out

Hi Oz storm
If you wanted to race in the age group classes, you have to have a real vintage MXer ie; pre 75, not one of those long travel modern dirt bikes, that belong in pre 78
cheers

Hey oz-strom which state are you in?

I am running a 1979 PE175N here in Victoria until my RM125 project is finished (probably around 2029  ;)).

It's not even close to being competitive but is still heaps of (cheap) fun.

My PE is eligible for three evolution classes in the VIPER series, which amounts to six races on the day.

Cheers
Tex

Hey Tex - I am in Qld.  Sounds like the Evo class is good down there for getting some track time.  I will check out the local events and see what gives before I commit myself to the first bike.   Might look for a pre75 also - I used to race a Yammy MX250A, and would stick a headli and tail light on it to ride to Uni and race enduros  ;)
