74 KX125 Wins 125 MX Shootout!
« on: March 26, 2009, 09:20:19 pm »
Found a 1974 Cycle World magazine that tested all the Jap 125cc in a MX shootout, its a good read with plenty of content, the test is uploaded http://vintagemx.com.au/?p=567 for general interest.

I just finished my 74 KX125 and apart from a faded gas cap and slight defect on metal plate surrounding rubber chain guide its near perfect! I am still deciding if I want to race it or not, after all the effort you dont feel like beating it up but at same time you want to enjoy it where it belongs - on the track!

I have started to restore my 74 125, the engines are very good just need to improve the forks, aftermarket shocks fix the rear.
Get it out on the track

my how the tables turned in 1975 eh ;) I do like the little kawa's but since an early KX125 isn't going to happen in this lifetime I plan on building a close visual replica of the G31M Greenstreak using a G3, G4 or G5. That way it's affordable as I don't have the fight for the parts I'll need ;D shame we don't have a 100 class :-\ ::)

Doc,

You probably already know this - G3/G4 frames are v similar to G31M. G5 frame is completely different, but the engine was v similar. Forks & wheels I believe were same as F6 125, tho some G31Ms came w those wretched hatta forks which were so bad. I rode a G31M back in the day w hatta forks & susp was dreadful!

What about yr 'KX125' copy based on KS/KE125??

mmm JC..thought seriously about the KX replica based on the KS/KE/KH but the G31M project is just that little different, a little older and a little more appealing to someone such as myself. Basically the same thing and I'll still be toying with the little rotary valve engines which is my main reason for wanting to build something. (Suzuki or Kawa as I have no preference with this type of engine) Been offered a G4 engine for spares and I think I'll grab that too ;) really need to go collect the bike before I can decide but it's nice to have some options 8)

Your right about riding it, I will take it to a race meet and give it a run, more fun than just staring at it.

just need to improve the forks.

Pygmy,

CR/MT125 forktubes & damper rods make huge difference. Replace MT/CR sliders w KX sliders & bolt em into the KX triples (same 31mm dia). MT/CR tubes are longer so have to run them up thro the triples. Just check the overlap is sufficient as KX sliders are shorter than CR/MT. Nice to have 3.5" min overlap.

I put CR125m damper rods straight into my KX125 forks. Gave it more travel and improved the action.

Some KX/KS/KE forktubes seem to be thicker walled than others. MT/CR125 damper rods go straight in some but not in others (so have to use CR/MT tubes). Either way, check overlap is sufficient.
