Competitive vinduro bikes

So what bikes do you guys reakon are competitive pre 85 vinduro bikes? I think it would be great to see these bikes race at meetings with the modern bikes as discussed in another thread. Looking back through old ADB mags etc, most of the top enduro riders were riding converted motocrossers.

Thats when me and my mates were all riding-racing, and we all had PE's, IT's, KDX's and XR's.

I reckon the Kato's and the Husky's  are the best Vinduro mounts, oh, and the IT200L, I bought a '84 CR250 for Vinduro and didn't like it at all and proceeded to sell it, hopefully this year I will get my '84 KTM GS250 done, I think it will be a very nice mount.

I was lucky enough to be riding through '70's. Starting with AT's, CT's and DT's we bobbed and weaved and cursed our way through the bush. Stood around campfires and bench raced and again cursed the ill handling 'I'm gonna kill you' suspensions and chassis. We dreamt of lightweight, powerful, good handling, great suspension, great braking bikes.  With the merest suggestion  in advertisements or a mag road test of an improvement we would rush out in droves to buy the latest and greatest. We rode faster, and crashed harder , but we didn't have any more fun.

You're right Roger, the Vinduro events are primarily about FUN (and what fun they are).

I think Zorroz was referring to the possibility of racing Pre 85 bikes in a separate class alongside modern bikes at regular enduros, as was discussed elsewhere here.

..........unless your'e Malcolm Smith or Dick Burleson,your'e not going to be competitive against new bikes. Just ride and enjoy the old ones,they're simpler and more fun anyway !!!!!!!!!

Yer, that's right Roger, I just go out thinking it's to be a souped up trail ride, I'm too old to worry about being 'competive', unless of course someone tries to pass me...

not necessarily Roger, i know several guys around here that are good riders and would be and have proven to be more than competitive against modern bikes.

I believe thats possible and true,but that doesn't include the majority of us,most of us are in it for the V (vintage) part of VMX. The part about the bikes we used to have or wanted to have or just dreamed of having............or maybe its just those of us over forty.Good luck to those that can compete with modern bikes,they're doing better than me.......probably a damn sight younger too !!!    pricks !!!

Ummm, Maybe the question was being asked due to the consideration by MA to include a pre 85 class at national level enduro events? do you not think that they would be considered to be a competetive events???

Didn't geoff(Copy everybody else's shit)ballard do a six day on his 81 Maico in the last few years



It's OK for guys that have never been competetive to just ride around in the sunshine having fun, ... but for those of us who have been racers most opf our lives, that is not where the excitement is

Maybe I'm on the wrong track,I had the impression the question was about vintage bikes AGAINST modern bikes,as opposed to racing at the same meeting. (sorry ........blonde moment !!!)
  In this case pretty much any vintage mount ,in its year and capacity class ,is competitive if prepared properly and with a competent rider.

Roger , At the Gold Coast Master Games ENDURO event ( November last year ) they had all different age groups ranging from 20 y/o to over 65 riding vintage  and (moderns 95% of bikes) . It all boiled down to SKILL and technic rather than technology .
The proof was in the pudding when a Pe 250 out classed the young guns on moderns 
In all I must agree it's all about putting smiles on faces and enjoying yourself

If you were given the chance to race an IT490 in a modern class - say at a the A4DE would you be up for the challenge?
Entry fee's would be covered by sponsorship and it would be a test of "old vs new" would you throw a leg over your IT490 and have a crack?

Just curious as I am thinking about organising something for next years A4DE.

yeah if you did competitive the first time round then having a laugh is probably more appealing....older bikes are better, you can blame them for your current trail speed.
