« on: March 07, 2009, 10:01:46 PM »
I don't know how to work this site, like add links or pictures. But some interesting news; A chap in England is now reproducing reed cylinders to suit the  81 82 490.
price= AU$2532 PLUS SHIPPING. :)
"light weight, and it works great"  :)

Bill Eyler is selling a factory reed barrel right now on ebay USA - reserve must be pretty high? Bill is an honest seller however.

It'll be interesting to see the pommy ones - but hate to think how much the postage will be ???

Heads are interchangeable. Factory barrels and I guess the repo ones are secured to the barrel at the rear by 2 x 10mm allen bolts as opposed to the usual studs through the base flange on standard models

Hey - I know those cases and barrel - lol !!!

If anyone wants a close up I'll do my best to get some pics of either the black one or a blasted one I have. for a comparison I also have a Mossbarger conversion which are very well done after market machined versions that are rarely seen.

I saw this picture of a new cast 490 reed cylinder on the MXTRAX.UK vintage forum .I don't know if these are the ones that MICK-DE is referring to . I think that I read that they are going to use a nicasil bore , with no steel liner . I had heard a while back, that Eric Cook, from Maico Only in the USA was also going to make new cast 490 reed cylinders . I don't know if that has happened yet .

Now THAT looks the business.

Glad I obtained mine when I did though - the cost is pretty spectacular for the repos

Bill Eylers factory reed is sitting at $1200 and reserve not met (ebay USA #280319818534) with 4+ days to go

Nicasil sounds good - those barrels are already mighty heavy with the Teutonic finning, lol !!!

Who's in for one?

They are a bit of a wank really. They already pull like a fifteen year old boy from the bottom. I just can't justify that sort of money on a barrel.  If anybody is going to buy one, i am interested in their original. Some champion cut all the fins off mine  ::)
Thats not the barrel i sold him. He sold it a while ago for the price of a small country.
I sold the reed barrel to Bill Eyler in exchange for an mc 490 frame, Thor swingarm, Fox shocks, set of plastics, gear box set,mc cases and 80% of the postage costs. That is ridiculous.
I must say that the deal got a bit ugly towards the end with Bill, but he did come through in the end after much 'discussion' .

It's funny you say that - Bill really wanted one I 'stole' out from under him on ebay and he was offering me a king's ransom at the time to try and get it to stay in the US with him but I had other ideas and besides with his network over there I feel sure there are enough floating about to keep all those who want one happy if they have the cash.

My son's 490 is getting one and I'm unsure about the other two, and sure the 490's already deliver a mountain of power but the reed does tame it to a degree.

I am still at a loss as to why the mystical Wheelsmith fin trimming gets done. Lightness maybe - but a good crap on raceday will do the same thing, cooling must be compromised in hotter conditions and besides those big fins look the business especially when you take the time to straighten them all out.

Why not pick up an 82 barrel. a few well placed cold chisel cuts and the cast elbow comes straight off then the spigot can either be machined down to 81 diameter or easier still mount the carb with radiator hose and a sleeve in the carb. I've picked up a number of 82 ones for good prices and I doubt anyone could tell the difference in appearance or performance.

Makes the $600 I paid look pretty sweet !!! Bill's reed is now $2,050.00 US - Reserve not met !

The benefits of the reed are debatable - the capital gain is irrefutable.

Wonder what it will settle at?

Looks alot like a '83/'84 cylinder, are they interchangable?
