Helmet cam
« on: September 22, 2007, 07:15:33 am »
A couple of us have just bought little video cameras that can attach to helmets. They are from Oregon Scientific, and take a SD card (2gb records 1 hour) and they are powered by 2 AA batteries (and waterproof to 3m). We have had a bit of fun watching some of our racing. They work at about 30f/sec and record sound as well.
Here is a picture of one on the side of the helmet, sorry about the quality, but I havnt given it a thought about taking a picture of the camera so I had to find a shot with the video being used.

geezas thats cheap, how good an image do they put out ?  10 years ago i bolted a tin frame to an old helmet and mounted a handy cam and backpack and hit the local quarry, i had a great time thinking i had full crusty images, well not quite, the whole thing when watched back was prity much the handle bars and the front wheel and was also lopt sided as the helmet was too heavy on one side, setting up the point to shoot was too hard to get right.

But these little camera look look awsome and no wires etc, they look crazy, but how good is the video, im just blown away by this, batteries and an Sd card, ill be fuct, technology god love it !

if they break or are faulty can they be fixed locally or do you have to ship back to US ?

On my 29" TV it looks a bit grainy but on the computer its not to bad. There is 2 setting for film speed  (15f/sec and 30f/sec) and the resolution is 640x480 vga.  You can plug it straight into your TV fit you have RCA connections which most TV's do or plug it into your computer. I surpose you get what you pay for, but its ok to watch on your computer. And when its on your helmet ya dont notice it at all. But you do have to make sure it is mounted so it doesnt wiggle at all and pointing in the right direction (up or down). It is best to put your helmet on and get someone to make sure it isnt pointing down at the ground or way up in the air.
