Straightening Barrel Fins
« on: February 13, 2009, 12:33:01 am »
Hi just wondered if anyone had straightened fins before. Just thought I'd get some advice to avoid potential hazards/snap situation. I'm thinking some heat will be required, right? Got a beaut of a rebuilt RM100 T engine (well someone's gotta love 'em..)  through the post but the courier's knocked it and bent 2 fins on the barrel. Thanks in advance  :)

Yep, sure can ;). I ashed the same question a little time ago and then successfully straighten some fins on an MX250 head. I used a heat gun and then gently used a tyre lever. Perfect ;) ;D

Graemes right although I use oxy (propane will do too)

Secure the barrel or head etc to a strong platform (a piece of wood in the vyce will do and a sash clamp or big G clamp to hold the item.

Position the lever under the affected fin (if it's a Maico it's a whole cylinder) and apply GENTLE pressure as you also apply the heat. The alloy will soften and at that point you will feel it yield to the pressure.

DON'T APPLY EXCESSIVE PRESSURE

DON'T APPLY EXCESSIVE HEAT

It's simple stuff
