1975 MT 250 kick start Spring
« on: September 17, 2007, 11:03:49 pm »
Does anyone out there have a diagram of how the kick start spring on a 1975 MT250 sits in the casing.
Whilst saving up to spend more on my CR I decided to see why the kick start slips on the MT with the view to chasing a new gear.
Upon removing the side cover I find the gear is okay.
The only thing I think that could be wrong is the installation of the spring, so if anyone has a diagram it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Glen

honda kickstarters slipped for years and years before they fixed the design fully - most annoying.  its normally not due to breakage of teeth or anything structural, more often due to the inadequate design of kickstarter cogs.  you got to get just enough speed when first rotating the kicker to get the first cog to throw out far enough to engage the one that engages the clutch basket - but not so quick that it does the opposite - spins against the face of the teeth and don't engage at all.   once worn, best to spin it first by hand till engages then kick.  honda normally gets mech design right, but not with this one.

Hi Glen,
check your email,picture sent ;)
On the MT250 the kick start gears are in constant mesh
(sorry Twisty but I have been having a long and intimate relationship with this particular part :o)
sounds that more likely the spring on the pawl
that lives behind and inside the gear on the kick shaft may have broken or be stuck or fouled
Cheers
