I've read it before on here but can't find it again.

Whats the 414 Cappra bore x stroke? 87x 68?  88x66?

According to THIS PAGE the bore and stroke is 88.0mm x 68.0mm.

i think ross was maybe refering that only 337 bikes of a certain 414 model  were produced by montesssa !

Ahhhh I see! If a Montesa came up at the right time I don't think I would be able to resist.
My GF's father has an early 80's (complied) Montesa Cota 348 but it is the 'TRAIL' version
with a bigger seat and a few other differences. It is road registered.

I will try to pry it from him one day but my chances are slim to none.
I look forward to owning a Montesa one day!

I would love to get a 76 or earlier Cota and rego it - just to bang around through the Sydney CBD.
Would be nice for something a little different. If you know of anyone that has one of this vintage - give me a yell.

Several have been offered on Ebay over the past year selling for about $1500 IIRC.

How this discussion lead to trials bikes I not exactly sure but anywho.

The Cota 348 is a far better bike than the 247. Now I am waiting for all the 247 owners to react!! I have been given that piece of wisdom by the '74 / '75 OZ Trials Champion who rode against them and then rode for Montesa from around '77 - '84.

The 247T & 348T which was the Trial / trail verion of both would be excellent for rego as the gearing is more suitable and they at least have a seat and better peg / bar / seat ergo for actually riding sitting down. They ae still more than capable of competing with success at club level trial (twin shock) days.

I have ridden both in competition and the 247 would do everything the 348 would
but you had too work 50% harder to do it!

As I said the 348 is a better bike than the 247. I didn't say the 247 was not a good bike as well although it did struggle a little against the Ty250 and Sherpa's of the early and mid '70. The 348 was developed from Montesa's W/C involvement and included all the attributes of the 247 with an engine most trials riders of the time would have killed for. The 348 and the even better 349 would pull a stump out of the ground right down to about 3rpm in second or third gear. Great fun to idle past almost anything up an almost vertical climb.
