77 RM250
« on: January 30, 2009, 05:41:44 pm »
Ok Suzuki faithful... I need some help to complet the resto of my 77 RM 250.

Four things;

1. I need a person or shop in sydney that can split my cases and possibly fix the trans - jumping out of 2nd and 3rd from time to time. While they are there they can rebuild the crank and put in all new seals etc then do the top end. I just dont know of anyone who has done work on the old girls and the local Suzuki dealer will be able to remodel his kitchen with what they want to charge. I dont mind if its an idividual or a business.

2. My front brakes are shite. A new set of shoes has revealed that the inner lining is out of round - tried three different sets of shoes all with the same result. Anyone know someone who can machine the inside of a hub?

3. Head stem and swing arm bearings. Both sets were R.S. Suzuki has them OEM but but again - they could do a small remodel of a bathroom for the cost. I would apreciate any and all help.

4. Shocks - I know that YSS is a huge supporter for all things vintage, but has anyone else used anything different or have any recomendations?

The frame and swing arm are painted. The forks rebuilt. The spokes, plastics, handlebar, grips, tyres, chain, sprokets, seat foam & cover and decals are purchased. I'm pushing shit uphill, but would like to be ready for Heaven 1.

Thanks,
Rudy

you could try MMT in Granville

9637 0277
used to be a vintage racer but has stopped riding last couple of years
If he won't do it he should be able to put you on to some one who can
cheers

Regarding shocks it is all a question of how wide you want to open your wallet.... most of them require it to be pretty wide.

I think YSS are a great option with real live local support. Or you can go for something more traditional but usually you get what you pay for.

Phil at Lightfoot engineering in Melb just did a few wheels for me and relined my brakes and machined my drums to match. It is a very good job. I live in country NSW and used Aus Post to send the wheels and backing plates/shoes . Phil is a wheel builder etc and is very well priced.  Go the OEM s/arm and steering head bearings, I just did my 250B, and don't know of any but OEM.( You can get loose ball bearings from the bearing shop.). I have had a few pair of shocks from the US- second hand Ohlins or Fox etc and get them rebuilt here by Mr Pons at Leumeah- you should be able to get a nice set, finished for $ 4-500.00.I don't think you can out of it for much less unless you have some good luck. I have had a few engines rebuilt by country bike shops for reasonable money. They usually charge out a much lower hourly workshop rate than the city. Call a couple and get a feel for their services. I use a courier- not one of the big names like Toll or TNT-use a small company; alot cheaper! Cheers.

Really splitting cases is not big deal , make your self up a puller out of flat bar with holes drilled to take mag  stator screws and a nut welded in centre that a bolt goes thru and loates on cranks .....piss easy

Most seals and bearings are available at Local bearing shop

Most likely case it's jumping out of gear is worn dogs =  $$$ to replace or recut

Original shock can be rebuilt

OK fellas - lets focus. If you want to talk about stroking something with scotchbrite go to prettyboygonebad.com and leave my thread alone. I hear Tu-Pac is a member there - he can get you a dicount.

Seriously thanks for the input so far.

Cases and going into them scares me - like prison.

If it comes to undercutting dogs the ca$h is not an issue - the thought of some inept f@cker ruining them does.

Keep the advice comming.

Re your front hub being out of round,
check the spokes have been tightened evenly.
I have a front wheel here that had a slightly buckled rim, it was trued up but the tension to true the rim pulled the hub out of round.

Hey Rudi I'm focused 8)
Can do the crank no problems, gears I would send to Col from Coljen Gearcutting in Melbourne for a look at them, if you can't find NOS ones he can make replacements better than OEM, BUT I wouldn't be surprised if the shift drum was the cause of the drama's.Worth checking the shift forks also. There would be $50-60 in bearings for the engine.Hubs are easy to machine provided you despoke the wheel or look for a lathe with at least 10in swing over the bed.

No no, I'm on gooutsideandplayhideandgoforkyourself.com. This is a more hard core site, maybe stick to Tu-Pac's (Rob) site. I hear it has a row of tents.

Seriously thanks for the help...

Bearings anyone?

Someone once told me about a specialty bearing place near or arround Parra?

Lozza where are you at suburb wise?

I spoked up a couple of new hubs and wasn't impressed with the brakes. An english specialist said they always go out of true when they are laced up so not so good milling them round before they are spoked.
Just his opinion, but it made sense to me.

something I have never had a problem with in the 35 odd years with suzuki's is brake hubs going out of round or a lack of stopping power from the standard setup :-\ I could be extremely lucky I guess 8) if required a better stopper for the RM250B/C are the RM400/250N/ PE250/400 or DR500 full width hubs..much better. In most cases the wheel is pretty much a straight swap ;)

No need for 'special' bearings (unless you want to) Evil, will be able to get them all from the shop down the road. I'm in Newcastle close but not to close to Rossco ;D
That's interesting the pulling out of round after spoking cloggy
