The bike is missing some key bits (muffler, plastics, although he say he has them)
It has a headlight which would indicate its done a lot of km's, and the KX's dont like that.
The expansion chamber looks like it it's shot
The overall condition of the bike is rather tatty
AND..... He wants $3000 for it will so it will be a very expensive project.

$1500 - $2000 and it would be worth looking at, not $3000

It's got 84 wheels in it and by the overspray on the carb, it looks like he's had a go at making it look a bit better which always worries me what they're hiding.  ???
Might be a good thing mechanically though? Who knows..............

What normally goes wrong with them, Bahnsy?
Mine was registered and I did motocross, enduros, trail rides and even road racing on mine every weekend for 2 years and only ever gave it a fresh top end every now and then.
Was I just lucky?  :D

Hmmm, the more i look the more dubious it seems.

top rebuild and gearbox 4th and 5th new gears no slipping done by me being a motorcycle mech

Trying to understand the description starts to give me a headache. Does he mean 4th and 5th gears are now slipping????

It sounds like the rear guard has had the number plates butchered off too.

Looks like some nice spray can overspray on the carb as well...

Yeh the old matt black spray has been out again. It has a 84 safety seat. Very expensive bike to start with. Mine is only a rolling chassis and the engine is in a icecream container (how many times have I seen that) but I paid $2500 less than what he wants. Long live the green machine!

Tony,
The big bore air cooled KX's were like the blonde trophy wife, great to look at but high maintenace. When i started the process to do the 83 i spoke to a fair bag of riders from the day and they can vividly remember having double the maintence on a KX500 compared to a YZ or a CR of the same vintage.  Trail or Enduro riding basically compounded the issue because of the higher mileage and useage over a given time fram Vs what would be seen on a MX track. Specifically and more so when they are not serviced in line with a MX schedule. For some reason the Honda's coped pretty well and given that Yamaha had the IT versions that were all but the same, they learnt a lot from what the trail/enduro group provided as a feedback. Simple examples are things like a 125 air box and a filter that would be better of on a KX80 not a KX500. A rear brake hub that ran on a bush rather than a bearing. Piddly little hubs and spokes that needed lots of maintenace. We've pulled down plenty of IT/YZ 465/490's and the gearbox's are generally pretty good. Pull down a high mileage KX500 and they look real sad. So i guess you kinda answered your own question in your post, you did the maintenace.

Well, there you go.  ;D
I didn't think I was doing anything out of the ordinary, but I did come from a 125 to the 500. So engine maintenance was a pretty regular thing and I got used to doing it.
Also lived at home still, so I had plenty of spare time on my hands to hang out in the shed and play with the bikes.
Thanks for the feedback, Bahnsy.  :)
