IT 250k forks
« on: January 20, 2009, 09:36:57 pm »
Gday, does Anyone have any ideas on how to get the forks on an 83 IT250 to work well? Also, who makes fork springs for them? Are they the same as anything else?  :-\ any help would be appreciated, cheers

The OEM work well when bog stock. They can be improved if that's what you're asking. You can start doing what was done in the day to improve them such as have everything OEM and spot on and then muck with oil quantity, quality and weights.

After 25 years of work and sitting around you would be right to suss the springs but I would start by measuring length to see if they have lost any of their tension rather than replacing them automatically.

There are a number of damper altering valve replacements you can get for less than $200 including YSS and Gold Valves etc.  These can be used by themselves or with new springs. You can either do the install yourself or go to a suspension tech.

For best results I would work on front and rear suspension together. Make sure the rear suspension is good before you start blaming the forks.

OR like my TT600, I binned the stock suspension and bolted on the YZ equivalents. You get stiffer springs, more travel and they were cheap.

I've got an adb somewhere with the fix for just those forks, if memory serves me correctly ( and very rarley does it) there was some filling of dampening holes and drilling involved.
See what I can find.

Thanks for all your info, the bike hasn't been ridden properly yet, but the forks feel awful and the rear feels good so far. Anyone know any standard settings or where i can find them? ie oil heights etc. The bike will be ridden by quick expert rider in Vinduro for a bit of fun and by dad when we do some trail riding.. Any ideas where we can purchase fork springs?

This is another good one but it is for the 490K - pretty certain that they were the
same forks for both the 250K and the 490K. Article thanks to "Olyamie" on the
