ignition testing - 79 yz125f
« on: January 14, 2009, 08:24:06 pm »
I've got a couple ignition assemblies I need to test and I haven't gotten around to buying a manual yet (too busy buying parts to buy a book to show me where they go) Plus I can ring Rusty and annoy him when he dozing off, - who needs a manual!

Does anyone know the what the resistance should be with this model?

Cheers

hi paul
stator readings are
red to white red 270 ohms
brown to red 1437 ohms
10%  variance either way

these are standard readings for nearly all yz125s ;D

see ya rusty

Hate to disagree Rusty.
Red to white should be 500 ohms +/- 10%

These are for yz125g and later.
stator readings are
red to white red 270 ohms
brown to red 1437 ohms
10%  variance either way

these are standard readings for nearly all yz125s

The ignition system for the yz125f is actually from the yz80f

Go to this site    http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/parts/home.aspx   go to parts catalogue and follow the step to what year and model you want then look for "Service data" this will have this info.

would you believe i was doing some work locally last week and spotted an old engine lying in the bush alongside the property. I grabbed it (as you do) and checked out the numbers, it turned to be a YZ80F. I pulled the ignition casing off and thought, geez that looks a hell of a lot like the one on the 125, grabbed the multi meter plugged it in and sure enough, they're stuffed as WELL ;D ;D

bit of a co-winky-dink though. Thanks for the info Neale (you too Rusty ;D)

Mailine,

The 1437 ohm coil is a common coil used in most 80's, 125's & 250's, as is the high tension coil (Spark plug coil), from some 78 & most 79 models onwards, its the 500 ohm coil that is the hard one to get. To my knowledge, without looking at ALL models, it was used in the YZ80F to 80K, 125F & G, YZ250E to 250H  only.(Dont quote me there may be more) If you want my advise I would get one from "Bert's Small Coils" in Geelong Vic, last time I checked it was about $150 change over but that was a few years ago. The thing with coils, or anything electrical, is that they really need to be tested under load. Multimeters are a good start but really are just a continuity tester, especially digital ones. Even though they are the easiest to use and read (Digital multimeters) an analogue one is better because it gives real time testing. What I mean by that is while you are testing you can watch the needle for any movement which can be a sign of insulation break down, you know, fine when you first start it then runs like a dog when it's hot. The best way to test would be with a mega that puts 500v though them to check for such break downs.

The other reason to go new is new coils tend to give much better spark in that the build up and release of magnetic flux is so much cleaner & quicker. These coils set the advance/retard curve of your spark as well as providing supply to the CDI. The better the coils the better the spark & the more precise the timing will be. I have seen bikes with different coils and different cdi's, they will give spark and will run the bike but if your lucky it will just run badly but the melting of pistons is a very real consequence.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Neale,

unfortunately all four sets that I have are rooted. Some coils read nothing at all and the couple that do are well below what they should be. Plus, as you've mentioned the insulation is looking fairly shabby on all of them.

I've been talking to a local mob who'll supply two new coils for about $200. Just don't have any cash at the moment.
