One shock into another bike

I have a White  Power shock out of an 86 KTM it looks like and seems to be the same length as my cr480 rd shock.
Other than the issue of it actually fitting, can it be just bolted up and used successfully or would it be a hit and miss due to spring rates and internal settings due to different linkage rates?
Second question is probably for Walter. This WP is a piggy back type. Is it possible to cut the piggy back off and make it into a remote reservoir ?
Probably too much work i would expect but thought i'd ask.

Check the Fork ID first and the thread (10 x 1.25 )at bottom of the shock,  .  In theory you could cut the reservoir off
and link it with a hose . But the hose needs to be at least 4 mm in ID. Check springrates and compare stroke . Change damping to Honda .
Ad up the hours and parts , then calculate . Option 2  Sell the shock and buy a shock made for a Honda .

you might even be able to unscrew the cast piggy back top mount and fit a screw on hose end top cap and then run hose to a WP pink/red reservoir like you could buy off the shelf. which may be available as spare parts still? that way it would be all WP parts still. Another possible option is to use another hose end cap from another brand of shock if they have the same thread to match the WP cylinder body, or custom machine parts as required.

is it possible to mount the shock as its is? if you can then just try it out first and then that might give you an indication of if the spring & damping is right. i would be comparing the shaft stroke against the original Honda shock aswell. There is often options of slightly longer or shorter shafts and fitting or removing any internal spacers if any are fitted as standard to achieve the correct stroke.

I'm sure what you want to do is possible but it will come down to how important it is for you to have a correct period WP shock for
that bike which may be a little more expensive to set up/make fit than buying something new or modifying a standard shock.

I do have the correct shock for the bike Walter. I should go to the trouble of seeing how close to fitting before going any further seeing as there are so many variables for sure. I just had a wp and thought it would look good in the bike( period trick stuff). When its all said and done i will just sell what i have and buy something correct when it comes up i think.

i found a few photos of the exact type shock you want for a honda. it shows the red remote reservoir clamped to the frame rail on the right side of bike. the piggy back WP one im also looking at shows a black body that looks like its screwed into the cast alloy piggback top, so i would assume the body uncrews and then you just need the top mount with the fitting for the hose and the remote reservoir.

This one is one piece so doesn't unscrew. I went to the trouble of removing the original shock and put it in the too hard basket and later will transfer to the what were you thinking basket.

If you cut the reservoir of a WP shock you may well find the oil passage in the body is not in the centre of the casting and is too close to the edge to drill and tap it to fit a hose.......................

How do I know this?
