Wheel building.
« on: September 13, 2007, 10:14:10 pm »
I've blathered over posting this for months, but here goes:

I am willing to build wheels for people at semi-commercial rates. I have the uber-shits with my work at the moment, and have been thinking about alternative sources of income...
Everyone seems to treat wheel building as some sort of dark art, but having built many of my own wheels, I don't think its really that hard - maybe seven otherwise wasted years in a pushbike shop makes the difference?  :D

So I'm testing the financial waters here. Yamaha wheels only at this stage ('cause I'm totally comfortable with them). $50 plus parts for a basic re-lace. I can also bead-blast, paint, etc as required. I am also willing to work with second hand parts, provided you're prepared to accept the limitations of this approach.

Here's some of my own wheels that I've built up. The only new parts are the spokes in the RT1 wheel.

L to R: YZ250K, YZ125C, RT1. (sorry, didn't realise how crappy this photo was until I posted it)

In Yass, just on the Australian side of the border with Canberra. ;D

Jim, yeah, no worries. I'll need you to measure the offset before you pull the wheel apart though! Easiest way to get a useful figure is to lay the wheel down on a flat surface and measure the gap.

Look good sound good.  You should start buying up all the spoke sets on ebay, i keep letting some go by for 99c just because i know im never going to relace shit.  I have so many wheels that need retruing is that somthing you will be doing as well ? as you need a lot of $50 builds to pay the rent, you might need to cover more bases by offering more services ?

Rent? Try a nearly $300k mortgage.... Lucky the missus is good at her job and getting promoted at a ridiculous rate...

But anyway... I'm happy with how I build wheels. Once I've convinced myself that other people are happy with how I build wheels, I'll  get an ABN, etc and bump the price up (but still below the normal commercial rate ;) ).
And trueing wheels is not a drama.
