93 Honda CR500
« on: January 03, 2009, 10:17:23 am »
All right guys, I have turned into a weener. I just can't hang on to this beast any longer. It wears me out in 30 mins. Getting something smaller.
Anyway its in top condition. The motor was completely rebuilt top to bottom by Rusty himself mid 2008. I've honestly done about 10 hrs on it since. Seeing I've spent so much on it I am asking $4000. I'm in Lismore but bike going to Brisbane next week for sale. I'll put up some pics if anyone is keen. Thinking of getting a KTM 300/380 exc. What do you reckon?

The RussMeister is correct, i have an 05' Ktm300EXC and i love it, if you are riding in the bush its the way to go mate. Gearbox ratio's are all wrong and suspension is way too hard on an MX bike for the bush unless you are riding very hard to make it work. they were the go in the 80's as Jap trail bikes were crap then compared to the euro stuff or MX bikes.

i used to trailride a CR250 with full rego up until i got the KTM. i found it so much easier to take off on steep hills as first gear on the 300 is much lower than the CR was. my back was no longer sore after a decent ride of 130+ Km's and i enjoyed it much more. the 300 goes hard if you want it but the motor is so grunty you find yourself short shifting everywhere (as you should on a trailbike).

as a matter of interest Russell, did your KTM400 do the big end in? i have a mate that had this go on his a year ago (2000 model KTM400) cost him a shit load, so beware.

Do the ktm exc models go O.K for occasional novice motorcross. I do like to hit those tracks from time to time. I just found the 500 to hard to ride there as well. I never felt confident on it unless I was on big open dirt roads. I used to ride a 250 and was a much better rider on it. Heck even the old IT465 was easier to ride than the 500 (except brakes)

What about 380 vs 300 ktm's. Is the extra cc's worth it or does it make it too 500 like in handling.

i think the 380s were only made till 2000
they are a very small bike my son used to have one
300s are very similar just the 380 has `more top end
and likes to wheelstand :o
but they dont have the big bike feel of the cr500 :'(
so they are excellent in the bush
just go and sit on one and you will see what i mean ;D

I did this exact trade cr500 fro a 380 sx , like the SX is very small and agile in the trees and can "tractor" like a 500 but i would go for new 300 electricstart for  a trail bike.  ;D Also I missed the grunt of the 500 so tried to buy it back 2 months latter , the new owner wouldnt sell. put it in the shed and get a smaller trail bike ,because you will want the 500 again  ;)sooner or later just for thr fear factor.
If in doubt ,WIND IT OUT

I wish I could, but I won't be getting another bike without the cash. If I change my mind I will just have to hunt down another one.
