Caps, if you're wondering about how much the fork should protrude through the top clamp I've seen various settings on differing bikes but I can tell you one thing for certain, the cap should NOT be flush with the top clamp. On my 400C 'when new' the machined groove on the leg lines up with the lower edge of the top clamp. Sliding them all the way in will achieve no extra travel and will result in extra slow steering. As a rule and after trial and error with the 400 I found if I slipped the clamps down till the bike started to get head shakes and then raised them about 5mm it was as good as it gets, ironically this was very near the standard setting of the groove just under the top clamp
slide the forks all the way up on any C model and you stuff the geometry and create a bike that just wants to plow straight in corners. Try it and see
I don't use any air assistance in any RM forks either out of interest.
