SuperTrack at Canberra

SuperTrack is the name of a new concept that the ACTMCC at looking at trying next year. Although their aim is to try to expand the appeal of dirt track racing, I reckon it might have vintage application.

DT has been in the doldrums for a while now, and particularly with the Juniors who I guess see MX as more flashy and exciting. Canberra has a good track, but I don't really see the sport as booming here. So the local club has been thinking of ways to attract more riders, especially the Juniors.

The concept is SuperTrack. Basically, it's an extension to the traditional 'short circuit' track. Instead of a big loop with a right hander thrown in, the track actually incoprorates a new section on the infield which twists around on a few sharpish flat corners, and with a big mound (not really a jump), in the middle. This makes the track longer and adds some interest with a series of corners. It makes for longer lap times, more passing opportunities, and stretches the skillset needed. Another appeal is that they hope to make it so that riders with knobbies can ride it, thereby getting away from the idea of needing specialist rims/tyres.

Seems to me that such a track would be a good thing for vintage, especially the older Pre 75 brigade. Not actually MX, but not DT either. Think of it as a sort of Super Motard for vintage motocrossers.

I don't know how it'll go with the modern racers, although those that have tried it love it. But if it appeals to vintage riders, maybe the club could make the track available for a VMX meeting sometime in the future (maybe even a HEAVEN round?). Hmmm...

What's the feeling, does it sound like something you'd like to try?

A few years ago one of the clubs up here incorporated their flattrack into the MX track. It made for long laps but what a change, for the better.

Last time I looked it seems the flat track has been taken over by a free style jump area and possibly a fast 50's course. Sign of the times perhaps?
