Montessa Capra VF 250 Resto update.
« on: October 08, 2008, 06:58:52 am »
Hey Guys,

Well the motor is well underway, the bottom is now in one pce, the crank was a bitch to get apart as the big end bearing had melted to the pin so yeah that was an adventure.

The motor now has all new bearings, New rod, New Piston and rings. The gears were imaculate. So all is good so far....... will keep you all updated with progress and pictures.

Cheers
Tom

Hello Well progress is slow as I keep running ito problems, my car has also been stolen with my trailer attached from my driveway so no wheels either so I am having to revert to two wheels and pedals. This also makes it hard to nick out at lunch to go to machine shops ect.

So the update is this the bottom end is all new and togeather in one pce.

The top end is all ready to go bar the pistion, As the one I have purchased of rocky mountain has never been machined on the inside where the little end sits, just on the side walls making it to narrow to take the little end and spacers, The old pistion measures 24.2mm the new one measures 23mm across from one side to the other.

Other than that it is all ready to go including a brand new carby, would be running now if it wasn't for the pistion, the other thing I have to do is paint the lower legs of the forks but having trouble deciding what color. Once those jobs are done and the bike is runnning it is resto complete so almost there. I am hoping it will happen before christmas as I am getting a bit edgey now.

Cheers
Tom

Yeah and I think you may not of read the the really early threads but I also did not buy the bike as a complete unit I brought the frame motor front wheel and front forks. So I also had to pce togeather the rest of the parts for it aswell as restore them once I got them.  So overall it is not to bad I must say that with out all you guys and this Fourm it would still only be half a bike. There is so many people I will have to thank once it is done. If I had the whole bike to start with would of been finshed months ago.

I hope it goes like S^&T out of a shaghi when it is done as I have never ridden a monty, I am a honda man having had many XR's and I also own a XLX as well. I must the monty has been the best project I have ever taken on, it has been very challanging and mind bending, I could not pay to learn what I have with this bike. I mean what other bike am I ever going to own that run with no spark plug lead conected..........

I think I may even have to stick a southwest montesa sticker on it but I think Jared you should make Built by Southwest montesa stickers....... Make sure they are UV stab. and away you go. I can make them for you at work if you send me a JPG of the orignal art work.

OK 2nd Update we are getting close now, The new pistion is getting machined at a cost of $120 by a custom pistion place as of yesterday.

Still haven't heard pooky out of rocky mountain montesa about this problem to see if he wanted to come to the party with giving me a new and I send this one back.Allowed 3weeks for contact, Very Poor he has got my money and is not intrested so be warned if you get a wrong part from him.

Other than that looks to be on track to be in one pce by christmas and running, the only thing left is to paint those dame front forks.....Color has still got me stuffed so that is why I have been putting it off, I might talk to Big K see what paint code he used on that 360. As the american paint codes mean nothing to my paint mixing guys must be a diffrent system.

Cheeers

Hello Guys, Well I have to take back what I said About rocky moutain as I got pissed off today about it, I rang him this morning after noumorus e-mails ect., It turns out he is going to fix me up with the amount of parts i.e. new badges, crash pad, fuel cap. To the value of the what the machining costs..... So that was a real suprise. I think I caught him in a good mood.......

Cheers

Tom,
I have always found John @ Rocky Mountain Montesa to be excellent to deal with that is why I suggested contacting him. Jared, John and Jeff Nolen @ Vintage Dirt Bike have always gone out of their way to help me. Jeff Nolen has been un-well over the last few months which has affected his business.

If you want stressful to deal with then the Spanish sites take the gold medal. Their prices always seem high, postage also seems high and service is slow or let's say challenging. It goes beyond the lauguage thing. Having said that I have never been duped although the quality of products from one supplier was disappointing and from experience postage is very high in Europe compared to the USA. Australia's postage is also right up there with the UK and Europe.

Maybe I have been lucky but it seems most suppliers are in the game for the same reason we are. They like the brand of bike or love the sport/hobby/interest.

Hope the VF runs like a dream when it is back together. I could be interested in your Bing if you decide to sell it.

390 I have brought many parts for my Monry and have spent thousands like we all have, You are telling me that Mahle pistions and Bing are in it for the love of the bikes??Come on really they are largish companies.

Also I only get pissed when I wait weeks for replies from e-mails. I mean really a month to get a reply is no good to man or beast. I mean when you spend 300au on a pistion it comes in 6weeks(after payment and having it on the shelf) then you go to put your bike togeather, find out it is wrong spend another month trying to sort it out with mahle australia and then waiting for them to go back to bella vista, mean while contacting the person you brought it off never getting a reply. Then find out at the end of it you have to send your pistion to SA JP's to then spend a further 150AU on it. So if you think I am being gun ho, I will have waitied nearly 2 and bit months for a pistion I can use after ordeing. I belive I have been very paient if this is gun ho, you could of done an around the word trip and been back in time for the gun to go off.

If I can stop someone else going through these hassels I would be a very happy man, which is why I post my findings. I am not doing it piss people off. But other people have written don't buy from solo montesa as you won't get the right parts and if it is wrong it is a hassel ect., So I didn't saved myself the hassel thanks to this fourm

That is what it is all about!! We all want to be riding the bikes with quickest and easist soultions.

Jared is the most helpful person never sent me a wrong part and always consault me if there is a problem before sending. He is very helpful and postage is so quick priced well ect. That is the way it should be.

And Big K is the same, at Bendigo Dirt.

Either of these guys I would highly recomend.

So if I have pissed anyone off I am sorry!!!! It is not my intention.

Tom
