Hi all,

Looking for a early model CDI unit to suit 1973-1976 Yamaha's with the white/red and white/green tracer wires, also has the brown and red charge coil wires.

I.D. number must start with TIA 01 ( single cylinder ) not TIA 02 is a twin cylinder CDI.

To suit MX250 1973- 75,  MX360 73-74, YZ250 & YZ360 A/B also YZ125C, all have black harness conduit ( Not blue )

Yamaha part number 364-85540-13.

My one does not advancing, its the CDI.

I have two bikes with same ignition system, one good CDi that advances on both bikes, one failing CDi that doesn't advance on either.

HI Marcus.

I can see the white/red and white/green pulsar wires and the brown low speed coil wire but the picture doesn't show the red high speed wire, doe's it have one?

the TIA01 cdi's come in several versions all have a two digit number followed by a three digit number, your one has a two digit number of 03, I am looking in that model code identifier.

I am looking for a TIA01-06 models such as YZ125 74/75 MX250 1973- 75,  MX360 73-74, YZ250 & YZ360 A/B also YZ125C, all have black harness conduit

TIA01-01 is a DT2MX 1972 cdi this model has black conduit.

TIA01-08 is a SC500 1973/74 cdi this model has blue conduit.

TIA01-10 is a MX175 1973/74 cdi this model has black conduit.

TIA01-16 is for YZ125X YZ125D YZ250C  YZ250D cdi this model has blue conduit and only one pulsar ire been white/red.

also Where in the world are you ?

There is no red wire on that unit I showed Gibbsy.

 It came with some stuff included with an SC500 Kerry Marsh sold me and I'm unsure of it's provenance.

The parts manual shows a 7 wire CDI unit but no information on the code.

Good luck with sorting yours; at least you have a good ignition to diagnose from.

The SC was all unknown and after some mucking around with the parts supplied I gave up and acquired a stator from a YZ and a box from an IT.

I had an issue with my 73 SC500 ignition and used a it250 one for a long time.

Just fitted a 74 SC500 ignition to my 73 SC500 motor.

Looking forward to testing and seeing with the additional weight over the IT250 flywheel has on the power delivery.

FYI

So after looking though my Yamaha service data book and various web info.

the TIA 01 - 02 XXX cdi is the earliest production model I can find, this is a 1972 model.

the TIA 01- 06  XXX is a 1973 up for early mx and yz's to 76.

Putting the TIA 01 - 03 211 some where in the middle of that era.

so
TIA 01 is single cylinder
TIA 02 is for twin cylinders
TIA 04 is for the might inline fours

Also found same info suggesting its for a GPX292 snowmobile ( the X in the model code appears to be CDI models ? ), but I could only find a 1975 SR292 with a similar alloy case CDI with six wires in a parts diagram, also for a single cylinder.  all the single cylinder snow mobiles prior to 75 appear to be points ignition.


Black   = ground
Brown =  source coil
White/red & white/green = pulsar
Orange = HT coil pos  or cdi output to coil
and black/white = kill switch.

This TIA 01 - 03 211 is likely for a external flywheel been it only has one source coil input wire not an internal rotor style cdi which has two source coil inputs been brown and red ( low & high speed )

please add if more info comes to light.

Gibbsy, good digging on the part#'s.

Not that this will be particularly helpful for you but you have spurred me to see if that  #3 box will substitute for the IT unit I have on the SC500and allow it to run.



I'm not sure that this is right but the early Yamaha CDI's seem to be more prone to issues than the Suzuki and Honda stuff from the same Pre75 era.

Hearing on that, I have Elsinore's and YZs

My Elsinore's over 35 years and multiple bikes, I have had one source coil fail and that was must likely water damaged prior to me buying the bottom end and running with the stator
also had a issue with advance curve on one, tried all new electrical components which didn't fix it, plugged in a early 80's Suzuki RM cdi ( some stator manufacture )  and presto advance and retard curve for my big bore & stroker not a 125M. "sweet now"

YZ's on my thrid cdi failure, YZ B models with the CDI at the steering head are a issue for sure.

Pulsar coils on the DT360, MX400b to YZ400C so hard to find.

but with all that we keep doing it and coming back for more.

I have often thought, the 70s was a great era in regards to parts available today, dealers posted orders for parts and ordered parts that come in bags of ten.

The 80's saw a charge in logistics, fax machines and dealer stock levels.

The 90's saw a charge where you paid a deposit on the parts awaited for it to come from ex east.

how there's no dealer stock you pay in full, and in WA " Wait Awhile " is very true.

my Elsinore's still have a good supply of parts today 47 years on thank you to the internet, trying buying water pump parts and rear shockie and or fork parts, and power valves in 17 years time for early 90's bikes.

Buy up now and keep what you have but " Ride them don't hide them" and keep living the dream

Probably only confusing the issue, but i had a DT360A ride to work bike that stuffed the retard/starting side of the double pulser. Red/White & Green/White. Was a full flywheel [like an SC500] but same principle as the internal rotor YZ & double pulser same colours. Anyhoo--being to tight to go buy a pulser i found the advance side was ok. So wired it [not sure how 30 years later] so it was on advance from the get go. Just had to kick it right & not baby kick it or she'd bike like an older points mag 360. Decomp softened the blow though. 30 years ago but think i earthed the faulty side of the pulser [but if that sides faulty would earthing do anything] & earthed the un-used same wire out of the box--so say i used the Red/White & earthed the Green/White, but it worked & never looked back. Those advance in a one step not gradual like modern stuff & seemed to be purely a retard to help starting, then advance from just above kick speed & stay there.
But--now i realise your problem is the exact opposite with the box faulty so that stuffs my theory except can you cross wire something opposite to my stupid theory & make it work again--as in start & run on advance using the advance side of the box. Starting to wish i hadn't start typing lol. Sorry bout that.
But wait--there's more. If ya desperate i've got one bike [DT125LC] operating minus the pulser & using a Coil/Box combined from a little Suzy LT50/JR50/or RG50 road bike. Source coil had about 350 Ohms so just ran the single output wire straight to the Coil/Box [only one wire in or think was a kill wire connection too, but only one power wire in. I realise yours has a Red & a Brown so i dunno--earth one end & if that don't work then reverse the earthing end. Have a happy dayyy--.

I have a loaner cdi for the weekend to run in a new bike to my YZ family, also find a better pulsar coil and installed that as well.

I have brought two cdi's new out of the UK, but both have failed to throw a spark as yet on two different capacity bikes with same stator and rotor combo.

Hoping the better pulsar coil is the answer to that issue, when testing.

But already thinking I might get a single wire pulsar cdi from a YZ250C and ground the white/green and see if that's a resolve are not.

 tests?

Thanks Gibbsy for the PM- pretty much same thinking/doing over here.

I'll post my latest CDI adventure here for the punters. I'm fitting an RM500 unit to my Pre65 JAWA.

The JAWA ignition is on the opposite side so the direction of rotation is reversed. Using my Xenon strobe and a motoring fixture mounted in the lathe I have determined the fire position and can time for the 2 mm or so BTDC that I will start with and tap the clamp screw holes to the base plate I made and fitted into the cases.

This whole thing may turn out to be a lot of trouble. As well as the CDI conversion I have fitted a TM250 piston which is 12 mm or so shorter than the original Czech 3 ring monster, so a lot of mucking around welding and machining cases and the cylinder ;D :( :D
