G'day all i have been offered a 1970's DT360 for roughly $500 its all stock and running im keen on the bike  ;D but what are the modifications needed 2 make it a decent race bike and im 16 so can i race it  ??? ??? much help appreciated

if you have a MA license you can race anything you like.   Are you a member of a club ?  where do you live, all these things will help us to help you.

DT 360 is a simple pre 75 that although not a rocket ship can be very competitive with some preperation and a great pilot.  Buy the thing, if not i will  ;D

modifications?
do the best you can to the suspension for your dollar keeping pre-75 legal in mind.
ditch the stock pipe in favour of something better, make the airbox breathe, and then a 34mm carby with a good CDI set-up.
they're a nice old truck the Dt's.
i got a 360a thats waiting for me to bring it back to life and thats about all i'll be doing to it.
and no freaky, it aint for sale.

Tough as nails things, but they're heavy and don't handle brilliantly.

In addition to Vandy's list, I'd do what I could to carve weight out of it - and it's there for the taking. I took about a kilo and a half off my DT125A's frame simply by grinding off the brackets for the road gear...

The other good thing about DT-As is that the factory made a whole heap of bolt-on hot-up parts - they're called MX-As... :) MX250/360A seat, wheels, airbox, ignition, side plates, pipe and carby all go on with little fuss and save weight, improve performance and/or generally help to make a DT race-ready.

Oh, and if it's got any/all of the road gear on it, and it's in decent condition, I'll swap you money for it. :)

Tom,

I've play raced, trail rode, enduro'ed, improved, modified and generally mucked about with the DT360's (in the day). I've had great fun riding and modding the thing, and I have affection for the 'old nail'.

But my best advice is, if you want to race, get a race bike.

Even with dollars it will take time and expertise to get a bike that is fun to ride let alone competitive.

Guesimates; chamber $200-400, Tyres $200, gearing $60, front suspension $200, rear suspension $400, and more.

$500 is a good price for a complete running DT360. You would be better off grabbing it, using it on the road and/or trail and maybe restoring it (now or in the future). Alternatively, talk the price down and put the DT on to Evilbay. If it is complete and presentable you might fluke $1000-1500 and you'll have money enough to buy a good dedicated VMXer.

Talk nicely to some of these old 'would be could be's' and they might give you more specific advice and help in choosing a bike.

please point me to the Good dedicated VMXer for $1-1,500  hell be looking for ever,  grab the Dt and do whatever, best be look at it than for it.  think i have at least 1 Dt 360 motor so you obviosly can get spare alot easyier and cheaper if your looking to see if you like riding these old girls before you shell out $2,000+ for a decent Ride thats not a shitter, with lots of hidden problems :O)
