2019 Broadford Bonanza

Just a reminder that the annual "Broadford Bonanza" is on this weekend (Easter Saturday and Sunday), and that all tracks are open for use including the MX track.
Come and ride, or just watch.

Also the Dirt bike swap meet down by the entrance gate   Im bringing lots of early Yamaha stuff . also looking for a 74/74 MX YZ  125 Yamaha .

good weekend generally,hope i didn't give you too hard a time at R/B scruitineering Curtis,tape over the tailite wasn't it!,numbers looked down,except over at the dirt track,chockers,manage a couple laps on drakies vinduro loops sunday,only got lost at the 1st hill,went left instead of right ::),bloody dusty,guess middle of a drought you gotta expect that,r/race shower block was sucking the mud from the dam  :o,headed for home late sundy nite  ran into torrential rains most of the way to the border,so i guess we were pretty lucky with the weather,roll on next year :P
work,the curse of the racing class!!
if a hammer dosn't fix it,you have a electrical problem!!

Personaly it was my best Bonanza yet! heaps of road circuit time and the sunday free for all on the dirt track was a blast. I even got first hand reports on the MX track being fun (running the reverse direction to previous years). The weather was perfect all weekend and poured down Sunday night after we left.

What do the MX fraternity want to increase numbers at the Moto Cross section of the Bonanza  2020?
This is a serious question as the organisers of the Bonanza are keen on making more of the MX area, and are open to suggestions.

G'Day mate..
Maybe for 2020 make the mx entries open to pre 2000 2 stroke bikes.
Flat rate mx entry of $25 as an example... plus licences if required to generate more numbers and interest in what the event has to offer.
Run upto pre 85 in the first half of the hour eg 9 til 930 then rotating 85 to pre 2000 onwards 930-10. 
Food for thought. 
Is there hoses for hand watering where is required?

You're running an event targetted at 4/7 and 9/9  Classic era bikes on a full National Motocross track- I flagged for MX nationals the previous week -and the track was unchanged?
On the day the standard of officialing was average at best. I lined up to go out about 20 minutes before scheduled lunch to watch as the session was red flagged so the sprinklers could be turned on. They were turned off about 20 minutes later. After lunch when I went out again that session- with maybe 6 riders- was also red flagged because a bike was stopped on the track. We waited about 10 minutes for the rider to decide it was not gunna go then another few as it was pushed up the hill and out. Should have been a yellow for about 30 seconds.
If you love it, lube it.

Thanks for the replies. If anybody else has any suggestions please put them in as the Bonanza organisers are wanting to make the MX side of the event bigger and better.

Hi Jasper, MX needs a theme. Road racing have the major theme but Rick Wason always organises a theme for the Speedway and Dirt Track eg Romsey Reunion, The Street SR4s, Vincent/JAP sidecars. Many top line ex MX stars have frequented the Speedway as they also rode Romsey or Short Circuit. But nothing leads them to the MX track as it just a ride what you brungtype feel. Lots of Wallan racers when Rosco Holden did his Mini bike Reunion last year. Why not develop a theme such as showcasing the Grand National winners and racers from Christmas Hills or let’s honour Ray Owen for starting many careers at Wallan, or bikes of the Suspension revolution, or Big Bad 4 Bangers. It needs someone however with the drive to contact and persuade some of the greats to attend, organise and showcase some riders and bikes. Just an idea and my 2 bob opinion.

G'day Rob,

You get lots of riders on the roadrace track because your average classic bike owner rarely gets a chance to take their bikes casually on a track, l think the same for dirt track & speedway owners, motocross riders have lots of nicely prepared tracks as options, so you really need something special for the owners to risk paying to wear-out their classic bike, that took lots of time & money to build.

Yeh sure classic riders, be them road, mx or speedway, all want to show their bikes off to other enthusiasts and meet old friends.

Broadford has fantastic facilities but the track is a gamble (based on previous years) as to what condition it is going to be in. Tight-arse, old-timer mx riders will not pay the money to be greated with poor conditions.  Not such a concern for the other arms of the sport.

It all starts with mx track preppers that don't study the weather forecast for a start, then the road riders (a few) complain about dust blowing over the hill from the mx track (which most blows up from the carpark areas) then the patchy sprinklers are turned on and riders are then greated with mud, dust, mud, dust but worse is that Broadford dirt can be like ice once it is has just been watered.

The track was at its best about 4 or 5 years ago when the then Manager (Marty) had spread a lot of wood-chips around the track, this kept the moisture in the ground and prevented it from forming concrete ruts.

You cannot expect vintage riders to be happy riding a modernish track (table-tops, steep up/down ramps, step-ups / step-downs). So it's a combination of things but the track plays a big part. l remember a couple of years back, there was a great Bonanza turn-out of mx riders when there was a 'Pre 75' grass-track (which was dusty as hell and miles too small) offered to riders; there were heaps riding that track (proves that the offer of the right track brings the riders).

l seem to remember a couple of years back, a rally-car circuit was graded-in where the enduro (shitty ground when not prepared) track was, this track would be easy for a water-truck to drive around, plus dust from that area might not blow over the roadrace track? That track would be perfect for classic bikes! l even think that you cold run mx bikes on ONLY that track, forget about the modern track. l remember riding the 'Channel 0 track' there back in '76? (real dusty)

Spectator wise, the road & speedway get them because they have riders & bikes fo them to look at, l guess we all realize why the mx track doesn't bring in spectators if there are no riders. Maybe offer free entry if you bring a bike to show?

Personally l think the track needs more mulch, thought put into where the water will pool if rain or over watering occurs, in the lead-up to an event the track should be ripped & watered (if no rain forecast) then rolled, rolling it should keep in the moisture in and help water run off should it rain. Rolling it will lessen the ruts forming and keep the track smoother for old bikes.

The BIG mistake that the governers of the sport make is they ask the existing riders/racers what they think the sport needs, obviously if they are still competing they are pretty happy with things the way they are ...... speak to those that do not race/compete anymore.

l guess you just need to get a reputation for preparing a good track, spectators that see a mud-fest at the Nationals, aren't going to be in a hurry to ride the track  :-)

After typing all this l have talked myself into believing that the long rally-car track is the answer, l know that l & many others would come and help prepare it & give input for it.  Trust me, build it and they will come.

I agree the current MX track is too challenging for your average Joe who wants to drag his classic bike and classic body out once a year to have a blast around the track and have a bit of fun. The result is they don't bother its all to hard. As you said build another track that's not on the side of a mountain and a bit more user friendly for the older riders and you will find they will come.

I also agree, that MX track will never pull vintage numbers. Thats all there is to it. But if a vintage friendly track was better set up and prepared numbers would pick up. I think you would need some dedicated vmxers to be involed in that process.

Maybe only ride on a classic track but have Pro modern racers put on morning & afternoon display riding sessions on the modern track but make the track more spectacular: will keep the kids entertained (kids that have little interest in vintage bikes).
