Ivan Mauger
« on: April 17, 2018, 12:36:11 pm »

One of the great if not the greatest speedway riders passed away yesterday. Ivan Mauger was in my eyes one of the great riders who started with very little and through determination and skill won every accolade in the speedway world.

RIP Ivan.

Certainly a great of motorcycle Speedway.. I can remember he would come to WA and race at Claremont over many summers.. raced on the world stage when the Kiwis were winning everything.. at the  same time Barry Briggs and Ronnie Moore were all over the rostrum as well.. must have been something in the Kiwi water.. RIP

I also remember going to Claremont and watching him ride. Good times.
I've still got the magazine somewhere (think it was Cycle World) which has the speedway bike he had gold plated.

RIP.

Having a flick through the book Will to Win.
Would be a big eye opener to some modern day racers on reflections of days passed (page 33).
Ivan was weeding tulips off a platform as to not disturd the bulbs /flowers at the race track,he states it contributed to his upper body strenght.
Over time this built a relationship and Ivan was to be given keys to the racetrack, once his chores where complete he could do a few laps on the cinders.
A wonderful historic part of the community. 8)
RIP Ivan, the man of many talents.
Best is in the West !!
