klx250 cam question

My klx is cam timed at the kl250 mark on the cam. Can I time it to the kz200 mark without any valve clearance issues? Thanks.

It should work as the motors are very similar but turn the motor over by hand before using the kick-started and bending a valve.now as to why there's 2 timing marks I'd say the 200 marks are either advanced or retarded cam timing and the best way to find out is trace the cam spocket out on paper for the 250 marks then see where the 200 marks sit compered the the 250 marks, matching up with the teeth on the spocket, anticlockwise advanced and clockwise retarded.simples!!!Could be a cheap klx hop up!!!

Excuse my foggy brain but it has been many years since I had a HOS KL but it had the KL and the KZ position stamped on the cog. I dont think It fired on the KZ as they are several teeth apart.

I agree, Have a look and turn it over slowly by hand before attempting to start.

Are the timing marks designed to match the specific cam being used ?

Can't help with your question on the different marks but be very careful as even though the motor may rotate with valves just missing piston it could still self destruct as the normal minimum valve to piston clearance is around 1.5mm to safe at RPM.

Just measured it and by shifting it to kl specs stamped on the cam gear it only advances the cam timing by about half a tooth. At first glance it looked like 4 teeth when  I first posted asking if it would be ok. Iv already advanced it by one tooth anyway and not had a problem. Thanks everyone.

Yes, it's fine to run on the KZ200 marks. That is the standard cam timing set up for the KLX250 motor. Either with KL or KLX valves they will not touch. If it's run on the KL setting it will feel slightly flat. The KZ setting will pick things up a bit.
A Megacycle cam will perk it up even more
