1982 xr80 timing chain

Can I put a new timing chain on my little XR without splitting the cases,new to this 4 stroke stuff,I have done some googling some say you can,some say not,anybody done this?

Been awhile since I did one of those little forkers but no case splitting needed,should be on the left side of the motor under the Maggie/Maggie cover.not a hard job but you'll need a maggie puller to suit and a diagram of the can timing

Got the fly wheel of no problem,same puller as my 400d which surprised me,I've read that on the 100s the chain comes out from where the the crankshaft seal is but on the 80 it's too tight?i was only hoping to do a top end rebuild but if I have to split it may change my plan

Went on partzillas site and now I see wat you mean,OK you can push a pin out of both cam chains join the new one to the old by putting in a price of stiff wire and feed the new chain through then put the pin back in and pein the pin to stop it coming out.I find an old egg beater hand drill good for slighting chamfering the end of the pin on the grinder to help get it back in especially on multi plate hyvo chains.go kart chain breakers are a good size for cam chains,also tie the ends of the chain till joined to save going fishing when it dropped down the cases.good luck,want to know more send me a pm

have done a couple of these on 75s and 80s you can buy on ebay a correct length chain 25h x 88 links if you get one that is joined grind or if you have a chain breaker kit use that and remove a link than on ebay you can get a 25h pit bike chain link with clip to join it up again, piece of wire or long magnet to feed it thru the case all good

Thank you men for the help,looks like a joining link is the go,just waiting on some more parts to finish of the frame then I will attack the motor

nnoooo Scotty,dont use clip joining link ,just push (pin punch) a pin out of old chain,(dont grind)you need good steel plate with a small guide hole,do the same to the replacement new chains pin,but not all the way out,join new to old run it through the motor,(or as Bruce states wire them prob easier) flick old,& align side plates,then push pin back through,the fact that chain pins are "staked",once you get it back through the plate,guage same amount of side clearance as rest of chain,it cant come undone as theres basically no side load,only push pull loads,i use multigrips on small cam chains to crush the pin back through,then pinpunch for final adjustment,done it this way forever,even hy vo multi plate chains same same ,get stuck i'm at cooranbong if you need a hand or guideance,
