KDX175 starting problem
« on: August 07, 2017, 07:16:57 pm »
Hi All,

So have rebuilt the kick start shaft (Ratchet, spring(correct one) C clips and spacers on the old KDX. When I tried to start it is seemed to get a hydraulic lock and just would not kick down. I then removed the spark plug and manually cranked it, you should have seen the fuel that came out of the cylinder head, there was sh!t everywhere. It seems to crank nice and smooth when the spark plug is removed. Any ideas what the problem could be?

This bike is doing my head in.

I believe it is a flooding issue but I'm not not sure.

I want it ready for the Braidwood Vinduro.

Cheers

Garry

You need to get all that fuel out of the crank case chyna. I got melindas cleared with the plug out and spun it over with the drill on the magneto. Maybe you can turn it upside down and crank it out. You need to sort out the fuel tap leaking and the needle and seat leaking.
Oncee you get it cleared and started disconect the fuel hose when you switch it off to stop it leaking into the crank case.

I have one of those little one way valves on my kdx tank vent and over summer (with the help of an old fuel tap) the temp changes pumped the crankcase fairly full of fuel.

I didn't resort to turning the bike upside down but it sure was messy out the back when l finally got it to go  ;D

And hold the throttle full open preferably with no fuel in carb (while turning over motor).  I crank with plug out and finger lightly over plug hole, a second person is handy if you mot a yoga master. Oncce you stop getting fluid being pumped through warm up a clean plug and try starting.

Its no place to be behind it when that crap comes out, it gives the pipe a good wash through. Yep dont fire it up out on the back covered area Chyna.
There is a lot in there if its hydraulic locking still, you will have to clear some out with thee plug out.
Once i got most of it out she fired up but yes very messy out of the pipe and killed a patch of lawn.

Thanks for all the advice guys. The tap is good no leaking there so I gather that it is a carby float (needle & seat) issue. After I gave up on it, for a few days it leaked like a bastard out of one of the carby drain pipes, emptying the float bowl I gather. Don't have any grass to kill but would be good for killing my weeds. LOL

Will look up how to adjust the float also.

If the tap is 100% it won't flood like that.
Fuel out the overflow won't drain the carb, just stop overflowing into engine (great in theory only apparently).
The pushing idea sounds good, and you'll need to loose weight I'm sure after your trip and high life ????

Does anyone know what the float height for a KDX175 is? Had a look on youtube 27.6 mls was mentioned. Carby looked the same as what I've got.

Cheers

It's all in here but page 12 has setting the float level.

You need the hose thing ive got to check it properly on the bike Gaz. And you can use it to see if the level is creeping up indicating the needle and seat are leeking. But if youve filled the crank case then its a sure bet that its slowly dribling fuel through it. I know that all of ours have been runing much more reliably since we put needle seats and did the fuel level.

Hey mate. Hose thing? I'm going to turn it upside down tomorrow and see what crap comes out. Ill also check the needle and seat. If I need a new one I'll go and get one.
I just want it to be good by September. Blackie and I are thinking of doing Cooka & Braidwood. I want to do both on a fully OK bike.

I've been travelling for the last 3 months Tassy & North Queensland. Started with a tent and then bought a caravan. So I want to get on the bike again just can't make Bulla don't have the time.
