Marzocchi steering stems
« on: March 04, 2017, 05:19:04 pm »
Will the stem in these clamps found in late 79's KTM and Canams just press out with a hydraulic press or is heat required as well?
Theres no pinch bolt so i think its will probably be tight.

I tried to get one pressed out in 50tn press and gave up when we thought it was going to bend/break......

Thats not what i want to hear. Has ANYONE removed one of these stems before? Lower looks forged so surely its just pressed in?

also how far from the top should the stem come here? I know it should not come all the way to the top though. I am guessing 3mm?

Should come up to within about 020", .5 mm or so. Probably not super critical but the pinch clamp doesn't want to be partly unsupported bad for it and the clamp security on the steering shaft.
If you love it, lube it.

Any high interference fit usually requires a bit of shock treatment in addition to the press. Set it up in the press square to the ram, load it up and then give the press bed a smack with a small sledge hammer. You should see it jump a small amount when you do that. If it does, continue the process, if not, you may need to look at heating it as well.

Ok Thanks guys. I did not expect the stem to come up that high. I am 8 or 10mm from the top so need a new stem for sure. I would have thought at least 1-2mm for gap though to allow for adjustment when/if bearings wear a little.

Leight, go with heat: aluminum will expand more then steel so unlocking the stem..

Yes heat can be very helpful, but I always prefer to try and avoid unnecessarily heating a structural aluminium part if possible, where its strength is important.

Heat it, you wont degrade the material. You would have to hold at high temperature for hours to do that. In my recent experience if XR you press cold, apart from the high risk of damaging the shaft you may also broach the triple clamp bore.
If you love it, lube it.

Yes of course i know which way they come out, thru the bottom, because there will be a step or c-clip that stops the stem pulling through out the lower clamp when you tighten the top adjusting nut. All triples are like that unless they are an all steel one with the stem welded in.. Anyway i am getting a  forum member with a press to do it for me.
