Over the hill, that YZ490 looks good, just paid $3500 for an Aus YZ490 that I found had a roached motor. I like Pokey's idea of filing a lawsuit against advertisers and sellers of said bikes, so called ex Yamaha race team mechanics ppffft.

I think pre90, 95 or pre 2000 for that matter will be short lived . Most of that clientele is only going for that , because its cheaper than current stuff  or classic .( A new decal kit and your 95 is just about current ) And when the cheap hacks dry up , they move on . Thats how I see it . In the long run a good Maico , Montesa , Bultaco , KTM or even better a Puch will be the Icon . Just went to a event in NT on the weekend ( thanks for the ride Brent ) and out of 120 bikes there was one (1) H2 . Guess where the crowd gathered and wanted to hear the roar ? Yes prices are dropping for many models , but some will actually rise now  . You just have to pick the right one .
VMX shocks , We don't just sell them - I design and produce them individually for you since 1989.

I think your spot on with this Wal  :)

The reality is real VMX captures a moment in time when inovation and development of MX bikes was changing week to week , and real factory bikes .

This later model shit , is as beige as a Camira . I agree 100% about the cheap shitter racing being the attraction .
True classics will always have a value but like any antique that value is a moving one up and down with the economy .
Its only old bike racing FFS get over yourselves

the yanks are back on the boil and with the dollar where it is they have a 30% discount working in there favour so a lot of prices are tilted toward them.

Sorry dont agree, VMX is total nostalgia for most blokes. Look at the age groups riding, pre 75 as opposed to pre 95. Guys in the pre 95 class are are in there 30s and 40s. Not 50 years old. The bikes that hold the price are the ones being raced in popular classes.
Pre 95 is here to stay as VMX progresses, ...early 90s MXers are far from beige, (in my opinion). Also pretty different to fuel injected, titanium valved reverse mounted four strokes.

Just to show im not biased and love the old bikes too, I finished Harrow this year on my 76 XT500 ;)

There was a time when people claimed that XA Falcons weren't classics.

The people who made those claims were wrong too.

The late 80s to mid 90s is my pet era. The only way I'll lose interest in it is if the whinging old bitches in the VMX world beat me down and go play with moderns exclusively.

Nathan , you are a Volvo man , I believe . If you could freely choose , would you go for a B22 , 1800 S  or a 144?

As a car for me to pay for, and live with, a 144. And by a significant margin.
The P1800 simply doesn't rate for me.

The reasons for this is much the same as why I'm way more passionate about a 1994 KX125, than a 1979 KX125: I have a direct emotional connection with one of the newer model, and that's WAY more significant than rarity, what other people want, or market speculation.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

My own favourite era would be pre 75, but I am 50 years old,
if I was 35 years old I would probably be buying 1990s bikes
Every generation has different nostalgia, for different stuff
Farleigh Castle VMXDN has pre90 bikes, no one calls that event " cheap shitter racing"
Lots of old guys used to say Japanese bikes could never become classic, they were wrong.
The only bikes I think will fall in value a lot are the ones which are already overpriced & overrated
(we all have an opinion on those ! )
And at least most of the pre90/95/2000 bikes are 2 stroke, which makes a change from the modern 4 stroke stuff

I feel the formula for success is, Is it rare was it rare Is it wanted was it wanted is it correct? Tick those boxes and the price will hold or elevate. Anything else is a weekly yoyo. My exceptions are period correct Accessories as they are window dressing and were wanted. I still get plenty of giggles out of those ambitious sellers. Then again we have bikes that were like fleas that are now wanted.. take the humble bsa bantam, every man and his dog had one but now they are becoming trendy.. lambretta...   Its a crazy world with crazy people and I may be one of them.

What about a 64 Vespa?
Greatest price drop ever :)
A lady(couple) on my cycling route, who I have befriended over the years, flagged me down last weekend.
She has a 100% complete one laying up the side of her house. No sun damage, upholstery and chrome still very good,
Cover blew off and has a lot of rust in floor pan and tin tunnel thingy,,,,,,,,,but running well when parked because of illness.

As I tried to weasel out of it she said, "I don't want anything for it, you can have it Mick"
Now normally I would have been back with the ute quicker than Donald Trump can put his foot in his mouth ::) ::) ::)
"Well its ok it can sit there as long as you want, think about it. You can come and get it when you want"

Its nearly the next week end and I am still standing strong >:( >:( >:( No more, no more
Why couldn't it have been a MaicoLetta ::) ;D

I probably should print a photo of that and put it on the wall of hope and dreams ::)
