Are prices droping ?
« on: September 22, 2016, 05:26:13 pm »
Been unable to sell a few bikes lately for what I felt was under current asking prices. Been following a few on ebay that seem like bargains but are not selling? This lovely Montesa is surely a 5/6K bike but cant get bids over 3k? Even CR 500 are not selling

I think these are just hard times, market flooded with bikes doesn't help either. On another note I am happy with my latest sales, latest purchase well that's another story.

Just got a fair price for my YZ360B......not the 10k heady prices of 5 years ago but a decent price nonetheless ....I'm happy and the buyers happy.....win/win.

Asking price is one thing.......selling price is another.

Apparently , if you want big money you have to have have an old cow chaser, hose it off and  fit a set of clip ons and call it a cafe racer.  :o

I do see very nice bikes at reasonable or what i would consider the top end of the market being offered for sale and they just are not being sold. Just like Slakewell has described. Then i see the above mentioned and Im wondering  what the hell is happening to the entire vintage market. its all arse up.

At a guess i think we should advertise or look on reputable places that weed out the BS . Fleabay has always been hit and miss but the amount of bikes advertised i estimate has dropped to 10% of what it was ten years ago. This leaves all the crap still there and only a few bone fide bikes so the result has more of a shock effect.

It would be good if we could file a law suit against the falsely advertised as  "full resto just blows smoke on start up"  as that may settle the market down to somewhere near realistic..

As generations get older the VMX buyers maket is shrinking. Who will want these nice old dirt bikes in the future??...other than me ;)
On the other hand pre 95 MXers are going up in value as that class grows.

I'm seeing more and more optimist sellers, and less and less bikes being sold.

There's definitely a larger number of punters (rather than enthusiasts) trying to make money from buying and selling old bikes and cars. I see a lot of them having small wins, a lot of them disappointed, and a few making reasonable money - but mostly I see them creating a market bubble that will leave a lot of them stranded when the bubble pops.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

for a quick sale, you need to fit a "barn find kit"...jar of red dust, jar of red back spiders and an old tyre. they usually throw in a can of instant spider web as well...

Put up a 83/WR430 white tank for a mate $4200 neg.
Tank respray the only thing to do.

Over 50 people sang it's praises but when it came to the money.
Not a nibble.
Even fired it up and took it for a run.
Mate says " Runs too good I'll keep it " .
and there ya go.

Wage growth has been slow in the last few years (tightarses!), and with that, people's budgets for their recreational pursuits (including bikes) has shrunk. Therefore, there is slightly less competition and less people willing to pay more for what is on offer. One thing for sure though, I watched a pristine U.S model XR600RG bid up to almost $12K last week, and an unrestored, but tidy XT500 sell for $6K, so compared to 15 years ago, these bikes are still expensive if they are very tidy.

I guess there are other things at play too, as has been mentioned above, the pool of buyers for "older" pre 80 bikes may be shrinking because 1- Some have got too old to ride and 2- Some are migrating to the Pre-90/Pre-85 classes.

Food for thought.   8)

Cheers, Mark
