I have a 78 pe 175 that i use for vinduro and thinking about getting it registered.
It still has the compliance plate, so would anyone know what i would have to do to it for rego, lights, blinkers, horn that sort of thing

It depends on what state you are in. You either need to go to your local/state registration/transport center and get the info there or find it on one of the websites. There are PDF doccuments online with ADR requirements and required equipment for registering motorcycles in each state. In NSW i beleive you need blinkers no matter what age the bike is and when it was made, in other states it is usually not like that. The PE never had blinkers in 78 and was complianced like that so unless you live in a state that requires blinkers no matter what, then you don't need to fit them. Simply set the bike up as it was complianced in 1978. See what the Suzuki parts book shows the bike having, then go to your rego office and register it. You will usually need to take in the frame and engine number, old rego plate or previous rego label/disc/papers etc are handy if you have got them. If not just the bikes numbers will do. They will then probably tell you that you need to take bike to police station for an inspection. Normally this is just to check the numbers to make sure its not stolen and nothing to do with road worthiness. Then you take the police form to rego office and then they will rego the bike for you and away you go.

Some states offer Historic or club rego which is usually cheaper, but you need to be a member of an affiliated club, have a log book and often you are restricted to how many times a yr you can ride it, and often the bike has to be totally stock, with no modifications or customizations at all (which can be very restrictive). Being 175cc full normal rego wont be too much though.

All i would do is just make sure the bike meets requirements for your state and then just go to your rego place and go from there. They will tell you what needs to be done if the bike has dropped off the system and they cant find it on the computer if it has not been registered for many years.

As for equipment for old bikes, general rule of thumb/bare min is usually

-stop/tail light
- hi/lo beam headlight
- horn
- mirrors
- tyres that are legal for road use eg no MX tyres and anything that has NHS or not for highway use written on it
- chain guard - i am not 100% sure about this, see what the rules say. Many bikes are getting around without them though

The PE's never had them when new and i restore heaps of vintage bikes that get registered that do not have them.

Generally if you are doing the right thing and not drawing attention to yourself you wont ever get pulled over anyway.

Thanks for that LWC, yep NSW, i have had a bit of a look on the RMS site but couldnt find anything as
to what a 1978 bike needs.

I am pretty sure you will need blinkers in NSW, but i am sure theres the info online somewhere which will 100% confirm it. Over 10 years ago when i restored/tidied up a 78 or 79 XS750 Yam, the owner was originally in SA and he would not have needed to put blinkers on it here then but halfway through the build he decided he was moving to NSW or ACT? so then we had to put blinkers on it as he found out that what was needed over there. I am sure there's probably exemptions for a certain age point though because although i have put them on 1950's british bikes when you get older than that is starts becoming more of an issue as you need to add in additional wiring, switches and find period looking blinkers and find a way to mount them neatly on an old bike which is not always easy. Trying to put them on a 1930's bike is a little ridiculous.

My 81 pe175 is nsw rego.d.you need everything to work including horn blinkers lights etc.mine was restored about four yrs back .has dg gold head and rm 80 silencer on it.not much difference in noise from original but 3.4 extra hp.mine is dg replica like on pe manual cover.

Just adding to Leith's excellent posts with a point about tyres: I've been told by numerous ACT & NSW road worthy inspectors that there is NO requirement for "DOT" tyres. 

Apparently the rule isn't that you need DOT markings, it's that you cannot have "NHS" or "Not for road use" on them.
In other words: almost anything is OK, providing the tyre manufacturer doesn't specifically say that it is no good for road use.

As one inspector said "but I like seeing DOT on them because it saves me having to look for NHS that might not even be there".
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Leith , I'm all for blinkers on bikes as its law to signal your intention. Plus its a curtesy thing.

My 78 PE175 didn't come with indicators and it was regestered from new without.  Signals were made by hand.  I think the rules changed a couple of years after that requiring indicator on everything. At least in Qld I would think if they didn't come with them you wouldn't have to retro fit to get reg.

Some states and age of bikes do not require blinkers by law. Instead you use hand signals. It would also depend on where you do your riding. If its in busy city traffic, then yeah blinkers would be a good idea, but if you live in/travel through a quiet town and just take some back roads to get to some bush tracks or something then i can see why you would not desire to have them if you had the choice.

DOT is an American thing too, not really relevant here.

Anything pre 88 can get full rego easy just has to be on the list (which it will be) blue slip(yes horn/ blinkers/tail/head/stop/hi beam lights) and go to Services NSW with EVERY bit of identification you have should have rego after that. Went through this with an import recently. After 88 it gets very hard

I'd feel safer riding using hand signal than expecting car driver to see those little indicator lights. Lights would be better at night though.
