Cant get the stator rotor off!?
« on: June 02, 2016, 12:11:21 pm »
Yamaha XT550 pulling the engine down, im stuck or should I say the rotor is stuck, its really on there tight from factory, low km engine, dont think its ever been apart.
Iv tried a bit of heat, I cant get the bloody thing off, its just destroying the bolts on my puller. HELP, I need fresh ideas. Was thinking next step put oxy on it to get it to relax but will most likely destroy the stator. Or maybe try a better quality puller?

Time.

put the puller on and tension. then spray with wd40 , shock centre with hammer and go have a beer. retention and then spray with wd40 , shock centre with hammer and go have a beer....
after the carton is empty it should pop off.

make sure yor using the correct puller as some are not suited for flywheels. dont hit the flywheel or the magnets can break or dislodge. heat is also not the best for flywheels.

took me two cartons once before a flywheel fell off in my hand.

internal fine left hand thread puller for an external rotor XT donk about $12 on EBAY get one and the job will be a piece of P for the rest of your days.

A very good penetrating fluid is a 50:50 mix of acetone and ATF.
ed, not applicable If you get the proper puller, but a cheapy, just see how many turns it goes, some of them need a bit of a counter bore to get a good grip.
i'd still use the assistance of beer by the way

Boiling water can be a good safe heat source.

There is no external thread on these engines, its the old 3 long bolts type. Ill just have to keep soaking and shocking.....im a cheap drunk too!

Does it have an internal thread curtis? most do but not all. if it does it needs a puller that looks like a thick short bolt. it screws into the rotor and pushes against the shaft . i also find a ball bearing helps with the puller bolt as a friction point.

Get some decent tension on the puller, then use an air chisel, with a blunted end, to put a few mild bursts of vibrations through the rotor close to the shaft. You need to hold.the chisel firmly against the rotor, not let it jump all.over the place.

Be sensible about it, you don't want to damage the rotor. You should be able to adjust the chisel output so you're not hitting it with 100%

A mechanic mate put me onto this and it works every time.

I always place some bronze or aluminium between the centre bolt and the end of the crank before you smack it.

No internal thread, I wish, it would be alot easier if it was that type  :(

I had one I couldn't get off with the standard puller.
Or a claw puller
Or with "oxy assist"
So, WELDED two 1/2 inch bolts to the flywheel(which I had long given up on) put a very solid cross head puller on, plus more oxy. broke the welds again.
Re welded the bolt poored more penetrene on put the thing on max tension again and left it on the floor for about six months.
Got the urge again not to be beaten , hit the head of the puller bolt one more hit and BINGO! I win!
The cause of this was I dropped a chain at Nepean at revs, the chain jammed at the sprocket, it went from revs to instant stop. Since I don't use a key the flywheel turned and welded to the shaft. Of course I line the key up just to retain correct balance.
dont follow me i'm probably off line!

I even tried with the oxy, no joy..its beaten me for now  :-[
Think it needs to sit in a barrel of Kero for a few months.
