4 stroke evo bike
« on: March 17, 2016, 02:31:48 pm »
Im thinking of building a 4 stroke evo bike.Id like to locate a complete yz465 roller or similar and fit a 500 single. Can I use any brand of engine or does it have to be same make?Anyone who has done a similar thing Id appreciate any advice on things to look out for, best fitting engine etc.Even a lead on a rolling chassis, open to any brands, the easiest way is prefered over my like for Yamahas. Not worried at all about being competeitive. My reason for the 4 stroke is most of my riding will be at a mates property where noise could be an issue and want to start racing on the same bike.Cheers,James.

Easiest way (in my mind) would be to buy an XT550, ditch the factory forks, triples, shock, swingarm and wheels/brakes and replace them with YZ465H stuff. Save you having to chop up a YZ frame to custom mount a motor.
It should all bolt up from what I've read. I've got a similar thing in mind for a future build, I don't ride VMX (yet, anyway. Wouldn't mind having a go at some point) but I reckon it'd make a pretty decent vinduro bike.

OK Im pritty set on the XT550 now, thanks so much for the sugestion,I just saw a pic of evo550s bike and that is exactly what I want to build.
Plus I know of a good running one for fairly cheap I wasnt even interested in it last time I was offered it.
Can anyone confirm if evos bike has 490 tank and plastics?I might PM him and ask for some info.

Evo550 posted info on his bike a while back. Be worth searching.

He's generally helpful and not one for playing secret squirrel: if I was a betting man, I'd say that he will post the link, or the info regardless..
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Do I have a choice now  ;) :D

James, Where to begin??

Front end is a straight bolt on of a YZ 465 forks and triple clamps, I'm pretty sure this would also apply to same years IT's.
Back end is IT 465, don't use a YZ swingarm as they don't match the quick release rear wheel set up of the XT's. XT rear wheel and axle bolt straight up to the IT swingarm but you will need to extend the standard XT brake arm to allow for the longer swingarm (Same with chain.) Plus a few spacers but width is the same and same size s/arm bolt.
YZ 465 H shock was used but had to have a spacer fitted as it sat up to high in the rear, it again was a straight bolt up......and that's where the cheap/easy stuff ends.
The YZ shock remote reservoir creates a few problems, number 1 is where it exits the shock head it hits the underside of the tank and again where the reservoir is mounted on the frame down tube it hits the tank, the solution to this is to modify the standard tank to allow these to fit, I took this opportunity to reshape the standard tank (on the yellow bike) to suit my liking.
The next problem the shock creates is the spring now rubs on the airbox snorkels and constantly tears them off the back of the carbs...not good. Pods fit well, but I'm not a big fan, so I had a alloy airbox made up. Expensive and never quite worked/breathed right.
I modded the rear sub frame to use a YZ seat. Motor was left box stock, solid, reliable, heavy and fun.
The side plates are YZ 125 "J" , guards are US yellow YZ's.
Good solid fun.

Thanks EVO550,that all sounds easy enough appart from the tank but I can use a tig and have access to one so will have a go,was there much work in making the tank look like that?Appart from the tank, finding all the parts I think will be the hardest part.Cant imagine too many IT and YZ465 stuff has been separated and still floating around.
The bike I was offered some time ago is no longer for sale so hopefully Krikeys bike is a good enough base to start with.
If anyone has any of the mentioned parts please let me know.
Im deffinetly going ahead with this project and will see it through.
My new 15 x 6 shed will be up by the end of next week so need a good project to kick things off.

James, I think that I have an IT swingarm. I'm O/S at the moment but will have a look when I get back. I have moved house and have a lot of stuff still at my old house that I have to go through for others as well,
Pete.
