77 Maico 400 AW
« on: March 13, 2016, 04:43:58 pm »
Just picked up another Maico, Frame # 3300****** says its a 77 400. This has an up pipe on it, it fits quite neatly but the frame tells me different as it has what looks to be a pipe mount on the LH rear downtube, any ideas???  Also were the rims gold or standard alloy? It has one of each. I need new fork tubes or need to rechrome these ones as well, other than that it seems complete.

My AW 400 has an aftermarket Wheelsmith up pipe, not uncommon back in the day I think
It is a '77 and has gold rims

I bought a AW 400 in 1977 from Brisk's Sales in Brisbane.  They had set the bike up for Matt Daley, but he decided to retire.  It had the wheelsmith pipe on it too.  I can't remember if the rims were gold standard.  I have old photos somewhere, I'll look.  I think Brisk's had a 250 also.  I know they had a 125 because I got to race it in 1978 at the Qld 125 Championships at Kilcoy.

The bike Col has got was originally owned by Phil Thew and had the wheelsmith pipe on also.

This has a new rear wheel with a gold rim fitted, the front is standard alloy, I might go gold for both.... I took it for my first ride today, bit of clutch slippage, but the motor is smooth and quiet. Very impressed.

I bought a 77 AW125 from northern NSW 10 years ago or so.  I wonder if there were many around.  It was in many parts but not as many as there should have been.  I was gradually rebuilding it but then ended up selling it to a person down the south coast of NSW.   It was a lovely bike.

The standard rims on a 77 AW 400 were silver.  I don't think they changed to gold in 1978 either, but I do know the 79 model had gold akront rims.  I have still got one.  I laced a Yamaha TLS brake into the rim in about 1980.

I know there were at least two 77 125 AWs in Queensland in 77.  I think Brad Van Barrello had one and Don Newell has probably still got one now.
