I just scored this Maico 400 Magnum, I don't know anything about them, any tips on what I should pay attention to on rebuilding?

Good pick up John. I'm doing one up as well although mine was a bit scruffier and also missing the motor. That aside I've had no real problems apart from sourcing fork tubes (thanks Bert) and repairing the magnesium rear hub which Paul Stacker sorted out for me. I'm impressed by the simple quality engineering. I've had no problems chasing parts and have sourced a bit of gear from Paul at Chippies at Maico. He has been great and his inventory is growing all the time. People tell me this was the sweetest handling Maico ever made. Good luck with rebuild. J

That is a nice looking piece of kit. I reckon you should keep the patina.

Cool bike with real nice engine. Plenty of info around to sort the niggles. That looks like a decent bike to begin with.

Nice John!

I am not a Maico guy, but if I was dead set on buying one it would be the '78 Magnum 400.  Red like the '77 (do not like the looks of the '77), it is a little lighter I believe than the '79 and with out the enduro looking rear loop.

Great score John.

Do you want to just restore to original or turn it into a great EVO class bike?

I believe there are more reproduction parts available for Maicos than any other brand of bike.

Thanks Guy's,

Not sure what to do with it yet, I get it home on the weekend, I can then go over it, it's not been started for 25 years.  It only cost $500, even if the motor is toast I have a TS185 engine to slot in :-)

I know you are joking.  Just don't say put a four stroke Honda motor in it.

But like I said everything will be available to rebuild the motor.

Actually my Missus is buying it, she found it, she thinks it'd be cool to own a Maico, she gave me a dirty look when I suggested putting the TS engine in lol  :-)
